Soda and Candy Banned from SNAP/Food Stamps - Coming to a State near You?

Soda will be banned in 6 more states. This takes effect in 2026.

The states included currently are Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia. Others are likely to follow.

"Waivers have been granted for Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Utah. Alabama Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, has said he plans to introduce a bill to request a waiver for Alabama.

Without the waivers, SNAP recipients can purchase anything except alcohol, tobacco, hot and prepared foods and personal care products. The terms of waivers differ from state to state, with some limiting soft drinks only while others exclude candy, prepared desserts and energy drinks."

Continuing to subsidize calories when the majority of the country is either overweight or obese is insane, but at a very minimum they should roll it back to a core set of staples like the "government cheese" of yore.

I was at a Steak n Shake the other day and a black lady got a water cup, and tried to get soda from it. Turns out that with the self service soda machine they have, you need to scan your receipt to refill soda; this is because if you didn't buy a drink, you can only use the water button on the machine.
It's funny how the redditors try and say it's not a good thing, as an autistic kid might only eat 1 type of (junk) food. My counter to that is this: why did you feed ur kid said junk food in the first place?

From what I remember, Colorado is the least overweight state in the country by a decent margin. Might be a cultural thing, don't know the exact cause of that.

In my opinion, we shouldn’t even be selling slop like soda and candy In the first place. Candies that are sold in stores contain such elements : potassium bromate, TBHQ, Titanium dioxide and erythropoietin.

Humans should put stop to the promotion of slop, even if it would mean the loss of jobs and millions of dollars lost. It would make us one step closer from dissolving the industrial society that is responsible for the mental and physical strain that it has placed upon us humans.

Based as fuck. I normally detest the "smartening" of dumb self-serve machines like soda fountains and the like, but that is fucking brilliant. You know just telling the thieving fucks to stop it won't do a thing, so the simple step of making the machine go limp until proof of purchase is provided is the perfect compromise. I love it.

Yes, the fats (and soda companies) must be made to pay.

How are they going to classify soda and candy though? Is anything carbonated going to be soda? What about flavored mineral water? What about non-carbonated drinks that are pumped full of corn syrup? There are a lot of granola bars out there with exactly as much bullshit in them as candy, will they be banned?

For sweet products specifically it seems like the best idea would be to make an added sugar threshold, where anything above a certain percentage by volume is disallowed. That wouldn't apply to diet sodas or candies though, will those be banned as well even if they don't contain actual sugar? What attribute of these products does the government actually consider undesirable?

It would just be nice if fat people could stop being so fucking fat instead. Most regular Americans can't handle that though, so expecting inner city welfare minorities to do it would be totally insane.
