Ham Radio / Off-grid communication

The radio I used out in the field was a a Xiegu X6100. One cool part about this rig is that it can actually run Armbian on the radio itself, and in future experiments I am testing out whether or not it's possible to run both the modem software, NomadNet, and everything self-contained
I had been tunnel visioned on a new icom 705 to replace my aging mkiig but if the Xiegus can have armbian installed.... I might have to reconsider that plan.

Ham radio is like CB radio with the fun removed.
Well, it depends on who your ham friends are I guess. Me and another dude used to talk across town on P25 encrypted on 2M simplex, occasionally had some guys key up to rabble at us, lol. And if you ever happen to hear this on HF late at night, that's probably me signing-off after drinking some beer and hamming all day:

Just going to be a slight debbie downer, check your jurisdictional laws. At least in the US when I took the test a decade ago, broadcasting encrypted signals is illegal, along with cursing, so https is out. All it would take is one bored boomer to report you to the FCC for improperly using the airwaves and get all your shit confiscated at best

Also as a technical question: Who is hosting the gateway? I can't imagine there are that many open repeaters out there that will allow unmonitored internet traffic. I could very well be wrong though

Hold the phone there Debby Downer, cursing is most definitely not illegal on the ham bands.

I'd also like to point out up thread I posted recordings of a ham jammer, breaking actual laws that has been reported over a decade with little to no FCC stopping it. The unfortunate reality is the FCCs budget is a tin can and some twine and unless you are fucking up business band traffic nothing comes of it aside from some losers maybe triangulating and coming to your qth.

i do not belive there is any public gateway/freq, the code seems to be released for both sides of the connection.

and on the no cussing / encryption thing the fcc is way more chill then you think about this stuff, now i would not encourage you to fuck with them but you are going to get alot of strongly worded letters before any actions would be taken.

also tune into 7.200 LSB on like a friday night or something, those old boomers can be pretty funny.
nothing like hearing someone with a trump voice changer telling someone to shut his faggot mouth before he deports him and the rest of the Mexicans and you cant even hear the guy on the other side.

The happenings brought me to this thread and I'm very thankful because 7.200 might be my new favorite radio show. I've had it on in the background almost nonstop and it's the funniest shit I've heard in a long time, I haven't been this excited about listening to radio since old school Howard Stern.

It almost feels like 7.200 should have it's own thread here since this is in Self Sufficiency and it kind of feels like it's derailing to discuss it to much but I wish there was a place to document what's going on with 7.200, If someone here is familiar with this frequency and the regulars on there much more than me then I think think they should try their hand at writing an OP for them. There isn't very many resources online about them except for Redditors bitching about them and reporting them to the FCC constantly, leave it to Redditors to try and shut down the best thing ever again. Luckily it doesn't appear to be effective but some of those people have said that 7.200 has been like this for about 40 years :stress: that's insane to me!

I wish there was more documentation of their shenanigans but I'm so happy to jump into a brand new shit show that's not even really on the internet, it's on the fucking radio! It's crazy to me! It seemed like some serious shit went down last night as they seemed very worried about getting in trouble with the FCC, I was able to make out something about serious threats being made lol.

I don't want to derail the thread discussion about hardware and what not but if anyone has any interesting stories, videos, or information about 7.200, I'm extremely interested.

I am now listening to 7200 and there is some shit going down too faint for me to understand but he sounds happy/upset.
Someone start keying really loudly

So far the only words I understand is "$108"

There's some guy laying down the law on some other guy with a weaker signal, saying he's "a taint sucking, bootlicking, FAGGOT!" And now he's talking about Hitler :story: I love this frequency so much, this would be nothing on the internet but the fact that it's boomers on the radio makes it so much better.

The sound is coming in for me and you guys aren't wrong. I'm genuinely considering getting a license just to shoot the shit with these guys.
Also there's the guy loudly keying, I hear you lmao.

Sounds like one guy is dying of lung cancer.

This is seriously just boomer 4chan. I have heard conversations exactly like this on 4chan.

Ethan Ralph's brother is on 7200 right now

I'd go with the Xiegu X6100 over the 705. It's got everything the 705 has plus it's hackable enough to get Armbian working. Also half the price and has 10 watts of power when using an external battery. Not sure if Armbian is supported on their newer X6200 yet though.

It's a direct link using NVIS propagation on 40 meters. There are no intermediaries or repeaters and with just a antenna wire + a radio and computer any client can connect to a KiwiNode within a radius of 0 to 650 kilometers in a theoretical deployment. The node hosting the KiwiNode software has Internet connectivity, but this is only required for reading the site's content. I would like to add offline transport functionality to the KiwiNode software using a file format like .zim so the setup can be 100% offline.

It also doesn't use TCP/IP for the link itself, but instead the Reticulum Network Stack, which enables mesh networking over low bitrate devices like HF radios, LoRa, overlay networks like Tor/I2P, etc.. It's some really cool shit and it was developed by just one guy. There's a Python (reference), Rust, Go, and work in progress C implementation.

This setup uses the HF spectrum, specifically NVIS propagation (PreserveTube) for beyond line of sight regional communications within a range of 0 to 650 kilometers (0 to 400 miles). All that is needed on both ends of the setup is an antenna, a computer, and a radio.

Most HF antennas are just a length of wire cut to a specific wavelength for the frequency you are operating on, it's very simple and a setup like this gives you true peer to peer connectivity with no repeaters or intermediaries.

The antenna in the demo video was a 49:1 end fed half wave attached to an arborist weight tossed in a tree. Specifically it is a "Spooltenna" brand one, but you can easily DIY one yourself. (Someone made one earlier in the thread a couple pages back)

HF enables communication beyond line of sight with no infrastructure. NVIS propagation has many advantages because it allows for less volatile band conditions, higher data rates, and because the power is uniform under a received radius it is highly resistant to radio direction finding. It's also much easier to deploy because you can have the antenna wire as low as a foot off the ground.

Also if you are interested in more of the theory behind NVIS I've attached some PDFs.

They are so dedicated to arguing with each other and personally insulting each other over dumb shit, I fuckin love it. It reminds me of the old school internet bloodsports.

FUCK YOU JEFF, EVERYONE HATES JEFF
Jeff has been declared a meme
I just heard someone say Kiwi
There is easily 40 people on this frequency right now.
"I call it a pedometer but you probably call it a pedo-meter"
Everyone is now angry at Joe.

7200 has always been a glorious shitfest. Best frequency on the amateur bands.

There's a boomer Facebook page that has 7200 gossip, that might be the best place to start. I know if you ever hear a "Baba Booey", that's a guy with the callsign K0PKE, and I think he plays music as well. That's about all I know, though.

They keep going back and forth on a big who dunnit (Before cursing out Jeff again) on who's playing weird atmospheric flute music, does that sound right for him?

Morse code bro just played the itsy bitsy spider with his CW

I don't think he's there right now. I don't know who Jeff is, sadly

Oh, the atmosphere bounce made sense, I learned of that before, and the mesh of kiwinodes also made sense. More or less was curious how you would get a live connection without someone acting as an intermediary to get to the website. Shack > Kiwinode > kiwifarms would more or less be the chain, and one way if I'm understanding correctly. No live posting from the off the grid hermit shack

I'm so happy that a bunch of new people are finding fun in these wild frequencies. Got my license in 2017 and only interacted in the radio world with reddit type hams who whenever I bring up 7200 or the stuff on 80m or the renegade repeater they look at me like I'm evil.
Some of these guys are master trolls.

If you don't have a radio http://www.websdr.org/ you can listen in here.

Id probably key up and get my hf setup more suitable if I could talk to KWers but then anonymity goes away, alas.

Edit: for newbies and thread tourists, if you hear a call sign look it up here https://www.qrz.com/ and here https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsSearch/searchLicense.jsp
