A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

If I knew the project would work I'd be concerned but it won't. It will never be finished and no one will ever answer why. And even if it did within seconds it would be cracked and able to be forged.

Not only will this require the government to build an API somehow or some kind of public gateway for this (bringing its own security risks), but it will rely on the eagerness of the people who develop POS till software to actually implement it. Go into a CeX or a Boots. The tills they use are fucking ancient.

A fake ID app will be released within hours of this going live and will allow people who are underage to buy age-restricted goods without a problem. Is Rojindahar Singh at One Stop really going to check or give a shit?

With a physical, laminated driver's license, it's much, much harder to forge and even harder to appear credible. Not to mention out of the price range of the average student to get something that looks that good.

Farage's visit to Congress tomorrow will really set the cat amongst the pigeons. I wonder how long it'll be until a UK citizen like Graham Linehan flees to the US to claim asylum. It's hilariously short-sighted from Labour whose entire support base are typically those under 30.

You can ban cigarettes, ban energy drinks, but require a teenager to provide ID to access porn? Young people will be fleeing Labour in droves which we've already seen in their 16 - 24 membership numbers. About two thirds of young people have already left Labour thanks to Starmer. We take everyone in the hotels, and we put them in camps. Cold, damp, horrible camps on 1200 calories a day until they confess their country of origin, at which point we brand them (I'm old school like that) and dump them back on their shithole of origin.

Then raid every last barbershop, takeaway, vape shop etc. and throw every illegal, relative of an illegal or employer of an illegal into the same camps. Riding an ebike while wearing a balaclava delivering goyslop? The camps.

Rinse and repeat and eventually they'll all be gone, either deported or voluntarily because my system is so hostile to those foreigners who favour their own over the British in our own land. Because they can't help themselves, even the most le hecking based our guy sikh will, in a push, favour the worst sikh over the best white man.
