Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

When it comes to watching some obscure old-school OVAs, I'm just waiting for AnimeSoul to come back online. Apparently it's being reconstructed and should be back soon, but there's a bit of a... strange coincidence it's offline the same time Nyaa got pulled.

@TheAmazingAxolotl I didn't know you were working in anime.

Saw this on MAL, bringing it over here.

To commemorate 100 years of anime, NHK had a poll to list the top 100 Best Anime--according to Japanese audiences of course (about 600,000 votes were counted, but the list was up from January to March and voters could vote for three shows per day, so keep that in mind). But still, interesting how all over the place it really is. Brace yourselves:

The site also has the 101-400 rankings and showed the top 20 male and female votes if anyone's interested in that.

Also:
Tiger Mask is #1 for 1960s

Mobile Suit Gundam is #1 for 1970s

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is #1 for 1980s

I really don't trust polls like this, and some of the entries make me think the voters are taking the piss here.

Look at number 38: Hoshi no Ko Poron has a reputation over there as a so-bad-it's-good anime in the vein of Chargeman Ken. Still, just below it is Future Boy Conan, so perhaps they're not all taking the piss.

Yeah, the list is really out there, but I thought it was interesting for a public poll. I'm actually wondering how many people really and truly voted. An estimated 600,000 votes were given, but I doubt it was 600,000 people. It makes me think of MAL's top anime list, except replace all of Gintama with Tiger & Bunny and Love Live.

The comments on MAL are fucking hilarious, though, that's the best thing about this.

Someone has to keep the candle lit on that classic (Conan, not Poron!).

Here's some of the stuff I managed to find on the under-100 list... This'll probably tell whether it's all a joke or not:

103: Galaxy Express 999 (the film)
113: Heidi, Girl of the Alps
116: My Neighbor Totoro
125: Spirited Away
131: Ghost in the Shell (the film)
137: Princess Mononoke
140: Chargeman Ken (now I KNOW they're taking the piss) tied with Lupin III (the first show)
144: Bleach
146: Creamy Mami
178: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
182: The Adventures of Gamba
199: Ranma 1/2
214: Anne of Green Gables
224: Mazinger Z
226: Rose of Versailles
244: Cyborg 009 (the 1979 series)
255: Hellsing tied with Dragon Ball
277: Minky Momo
284: Lupin III (the 1977 series)
288: Naruto
304: Doraemon
309: Romeo's Blue Skies
311: Nils Holgersson
319: Spaceship Sagittarius
340: Tomorrow's Joe
351: Story of Perrine
357: Princess Knight
381: Eighth Man
397: A Dog of Flanders

I'm not entirely sure they're taking the piss or not. There's a couple of definite jokes, but otherwise... well, it's very eclectic!

I have to wonder if the lack of proper home video release for some of these older titles may have hurt the votes. I mean, I'm sure they were popular when they aired, but if they couldn't get a home video release or syndication, they just fade into obscurity eventually (unless this mentality has changed in recent years, and they are actually all legally available without resorting to old VHS recordings).

But I won't lie that I was disappointed Satoshi Kon's works never broke into the top 100, with Perfect Blue tying with Elfen Lied at 392nd place. That alone, next to anything-Dragon Ball not making it and One Piece being at 72, tipped me off something wasn't quite right with the list.

I did laugh at this, however:

- 53 Pokemon Diamond & Pearl: Giratina to Sora no Hanataba Sheimi
- 57 Kimi no Na wa.

>tfw a mediocre Pokémon movie beats out a (frankly overrated and kind of terrible) Makoto Shinkai film :story:

I am surprised Tiger and Bunny ranked so high. I figured it be among the forgotten non-gundam shows by sunrise and this is coming from guy who watched at least four times since its broadcast. Also Gundam Seed is undeserving of any form of praise since its a bad low budget dragged out post eva version of Mobile suit Gundam. Even its ranked at 40 place. Its dog shit second season drags it down that much from being mediocre to just bad.

Most of these older titles are available on DVD over there, and are pretty famous to begin with.

EDIT: This list is about a decade out of date, but if you want an idea on what the wider Japanese public, and not some idiots on the Internet, would consider the best anime, here you go.

Yeah, that's better (I almost forgot about Sazae-san, that's another clue the NHK polling was skewed). I think this helps that this is just before anime started taking a turn for the worse (or at least before Code Geass came in), so it definitely feels more genuine, though it also showed that titles we really love over here like Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne really and truly never did hit it off over there. Tom and Jerry being on there threw me off for a moment before I remembered, "Anime is animation over there." But then I just got more confused as to why it's actually on there, and is the only non-Japanese title up there.

The lack of Digimon saddens me, though.
