I never played Other M, but it looks fine to me. There's some legitimate criticisms based on what I can tell, but a lot are just angry Samus wasn't badass girlboss enough for them. It was made by the Ninja Gaiden guys if I recall correctly, so the gameplay seems fun enough.
Gameplay suffered from only being allowed to use the D-Pad, and some frustrating scavenger hunt sections, along with it not really leaning into the exploration aspect.

And we’ve already gone over the story, and how much of it was butchered by the poor translation, though the original is also still heavily flawed.

Her height is one aspect that is up for debate, as I think her being that tall in addition to when she’s in her suit depends on the source. Most I understand is that it comes from Nintendo Power, which I don’t quite think is completely the words of the game’s creators.

But it is still jarring, I admit.

What a coincidence with all this Other M talk that I'm torturing myself and doing a playthrough of it again after 10 years, but with the Redux mod this time. So far it's ok and using an actual controller feels nice, but it's still Other M at the end of the day. These fan projects in general still amaze me with how much dedication people put into vidya/series' they love. It's really fuckin' inspiring and makes me apperciate the romhacks scene a lot more.

One thing I never picked up on with MOM is the lack of health/weapon drops. Was that intentional to make the game harder? Becasue it's not so much that it's hard without them as it is annoying if you were to run out of missles that are needed for progrssion then have to run your ass all that way back to a savepoint and the concetration gimmick comes off like a crutch for that while also casualizing the difficulty. It's like the game design was at odds with itself and the devs wanted it to be a little Resident Evil-y with resource managemet, but couldn't commit and just decided against it. Funnily enough the plot towards the end with MB gave me some Parasite Eve vibes.
Also also I'll ever get over how goofy this shot from the trailer looks. lol

I don't know what all the bad reviews about X-Fusion are about. I'm finally getting around to playing it and it's pretty fucking great. Maybe he fixed some shit in the 1.2 version but so far on Normal the difficulty's pretty much right on. I'm playing with the snes controls. The GBA patch uses the GBA controls. So far, it's probably about as good as I'd hoped it would be.
The 1.2 patch made the game a 1000x much more bearable. There's still a few little level design choices that are counter intuitive or are just tedious, but not impossible if you just tank your face through it.

Yeah I've slowly been making my way through the hack. Just got power bombs. Overall it's been fun so far but some of the level design is a bit questionable. Pretty much that whole section between the first encounter with ice x parasite things and turning the power on in the ice area kind of sucks. The ice missile tower climbs were also kind of annoying. I didn't even bother using the ice missiles in the long room with the spikes and the flying dudes. I just tanked the damage on the spikes. Also that room with the fall blocks you have to jump up with the alternating shot blocks can get fucked. There's too many quick reflex falling block puzzles in general. I generally hate that shit as it is. There's also a bunch of rooms where if you fall or just walk into it by mistake you're pretty much fucked and reloading.

I do like it so far though. It kind of feels like if instead of waiting for the GBA Nintendo took the general story outline of fusion and rushed it out on the snes using whatever they could of super metroid. Sort of like what they did with Majora's mask and ocarina of time. The dialog's kind of silly but I somehow prefer it to Fusion's dialog. I always hated the dialog in Fusion. At least there's none of the lady shit so far.

Step right up and place your bets folks, will the next direct actually pay off for Metroid fans or will Ninty continue to hold their dicks? The first (actual) Prime game in 18 years with only the first recently rereleased. Go double or nothing on the prospect of getting the games necessary for story context like Hunters! Want to know who this Sylux guy is? Better have a DS emulator fuckers! Place your bets!

At most we're going to get DS games on switch 2's NSO + Expansion pack only. probably with the limitation of handheld only. A remake with online multiplayer would be amazing though.

Well... Samus got a Tron-cycle...

Is that really the gimmick we needed after 18 years? Is a Metroid motorcycle really the special ingredient? I was uneasy and now I'm just worried. It looks like they're shoving open world elements into it too, "Maybe that will make Metroid finally sell like Zelda!". Everything I've seen after June 2024 has made me less confident in the game. I can still remember Prime 3's launch, all the hype story videos and gameplay showcases for the wiimote, the music sounding great. It really felt like an event, a conclusion to the series. If Prime 4 is the start of a new Trilogy, it certainly doesn't feel like it yet. I doubt we'll even get one of Metroid's famous live action trailers to sell the game.

At least we finally have a release date. I only got a Switch initially for Prime 4, and over 8 god damn years later, I'll finally get to play it. It will be the last game I buy likely for years until Ninty gets their head out of hollyjew's asshole.

seeing what i've seen... just be happy as nintendo has shown to have zero faith in metroid series and if they bastardize so much of the game to a point it became tears of the federation then metroid fans won't gargle too much of it because of the other M mental scar, even if you make it play like the primes... at least it will be a nail in the coffin of the franchise until they decide to exhume the corpse a few decades later.

i honestly don't know why the shitendo execs have this retarded hatred towards it, is it because people kept shitting on federation force saying it wasn't metroid because it lacked samus? or because they tried to give her a character in other M which was rightly sharted on for being retarded? the girl is the face of the metroid series whether shitendo likes it or not with the apt comparison of samus being the mario of metroid, shieet they are lighter on the whip with star fox but i don't know if it's because star fox is so fucking obscure to the regular tendie or not because only star fox fans remember about star fox.

Over a month later - and no new news... T-minus like a month 1/2 til release of open world jet bike Prime... Each passing day of silence worries me more as I have yet to be convince on,

The Story
The Gameplay
The Items
The Characters
The Villain
The Music
and The Planet.

We basically know nothing other than Samus gets (what look to be) middling mind powers, a bike, an ugly suit, and she gets to run around a barren open world called "View ros" which remains an awful planet name. We've gotten planets called Aether, Elysia, Tallon IV, all amazing names... and now we have, "View ros"... Ahhh Jeeeeez dude, nice "view". My hope dwindles, buoyed only by my love for Retro Studios.

Huh, I remember seeing gameplay of a harder Metroid Fusion where Samus was being chased by two SA-X at once, and they had speed boosters, a decade ago. I'd always wondered what the hell that was until I heard about X-Fusion. I watched a boss rush video and spoiled it for me, but oh well. One of the really nice things about a patched Super Nintendo game is that I can load a trusted emulator like BSNES and the game is effectively sandboxed. Caution towards running untrusted code on my main machine is the reason I've still yet to play AM2R. I need to get around to that at some point.
And I largely credit Mercury Steam with what was done in Dread - from ganking its very name right from a Prime 3 easter egg, to Samus basically acting like Gabriel from Castlevania Lords of Shadow, the game was very Mercury Steam. And Dread had its share of lore bastardizations, namely creating the warmongering Chozo. The Chozo race being lowered to one that has "splintered factions" and other petty shit hurts their enigmatic nature. The Chozo were supposed to be above all that, having advanced to such a state where they basically remove themselves from our base plane of existence. Now, there are also Meanie Face Chozo... it just seems so wrote to me. Like they said "Ahh, what if we made some BAD Chozo, and then retcon one of them to be Samus' father Oooooooo remember star wars! I am your father Samus! Lolol!"... deep man.
Ultimately, Metroid Dread was fun, and that's what really matters. I think the idea of a different Chozo tribe, which still looks like it amounted to a few dozen Chozo at most, was pretty cool. They're all dead now anyway.

Btw, Sakamoto had the idea for Dread long before Prime 3 had the title as an Easter Egg, so I don’t know what that poster means when he says that Mercury Steam came up with that title. Heck, he only went to them after he was impressed with their work on Seamus Returns, and when he thought that gaming technology had progressed enough for his vision to be realized.

Unless it’s just to add more childish bashing of the man, cause heaven forbid we ever acknowledge that he did good things for the series as well. Nope, Other M means he’s a talentless hack now and always. And only the Prime games should be taken as the model moving forward.

I am a bit worried about Prime 4 tbh, if only because a lot of the old team at Retro have left, and it being located in Austin Texas. I really don’t want to see Samus as some sort of unfeminine girl boss.

If you are really worried about AM2R the community launcher can convert it to a android apk so you can launch a android phone emulator and play it in there.

Yet more of the fanbase not wanting anything remotely sexualized about Samus.
I have no problem with the sexualization, so long as it's a reward, and they ditch the fugly neon piss-yellow accessories from Smash and remove the completely unfunctional whore heels (from Other M/Smash). They literally did it perfect with the original zero suit, they nailed it the first time. It was functional, sexy, but not "try-hard" sexy making Samus look like a two-dollar whore. It was utilitarian and simple, because naturally it was an undersuit that other people really aren't going to see... and it's perfect at showing of that SamASS.

I'm hoping Retro finally gives us a new design in 4 (that Sakurai will undoubtedly snub for the next Smash game like he always does). Seriously - we have yet to get even one Prime suit in any Smash game after 20+ years. We got Dark Samus and like one stage.....
