It's most likely a cost cutting tradeoff.Tesla did make a strange design decision to add a headliner on the Model Y Standard trim, but kept the glass roof on it. Tesla claims that this is cheaper to do than adding a metal roof, but that wouldn't explain why the Model 3 Standard trim keeps the glass roof as is without the added headliner.
They have the gigantic stamping machines to make the car frames, and they most likely would need to either retool to not stamp out the roof, or would need new stamping machines to cut out a fairly thick piece of aluminum to replace the glass roof.
Since they probably purchase their glass for fairly cheap per unit, the price of rebuilding tooling just for the roof would far exceed the benefit from the expected volume of standards they will sell, and, imo, they won't sell many, it's a price ladder, you lose a lot vs the "premium" model:
- way worse audio
- previous generation, notoriously shitty suspension
- no back screen
- no autosteer
- no fm radio (wtf)
- no powerfolding mirrors
- no matrix headlights (so you have to fiddle with their notoriously shit controls even more)
- non ventilated, "plastic leather" trash seats
- Vastly worse charging performance, and not by a little
All of that for 5k less. Nobody in their right mind would pay merc prices for altima quality.
Compared to the competition, you can get cheaper than the model 3 with better day to day driving performance (charging, suspensions) with the base model ioniq 5.
