🍗 Deathfat Eugenia Cooney - Youtube's Reigning uwu Cute, Emo ana-chan Supreme, had a child molester for a discord moderator

anorexia remains the only one of the two where obsessive social media use is currently understood to be a ubiquitous and potentially causal factor in the clinical presentation of the disease
I definitely agree this is the case, but speaking of Eugenia in particular, I feel like she's not really great thinspo material. She's too old and unfashionable, doesn't have enough self-harm scars, and doesn't even talk about her disorder. You could argue she's promoting it by "coded messaging" but the real thinspo girlies are doing that shit outright. Why would anyone pick Eugenia as their thinspo of choice when they have a zillion anorexic micro-influencers to choose from, many of whom are still young-looking and pretty by skelly standards?

I think most of the people who still watch Eugenia's content are like us: normal-ish people who are morbidly fascinated by this woman who's been slowly killing herself in public for over a decade. Ana-chan teenagers probably know who she is, but I doubt any of them look up to her or want to emulate her. She's the most visible and infamous skelly on the internet, but I doubt she's the most influential.

ETA: To say ROGD in girls hasn't been studied much is an understatement, but from what we know, transgenderism and anorexia follow almost identical pathways re: spreading via social media and through irl friend groups of teen girls. I think female transgenderism (and other destructive body-focused behaviors like cutting) is probably a better 1:1 comparison with eating disorders than HAES, to the point where the two actually overlap. Eugenia's conspicuous lack of he/they pronouns is probably another reason she's not likely to win many converts.

Eugenia is OG ana. She was one of the mainstream pioneers of the disease on the 'net.
I think much like twinks, there is a sell-by date for ana's. For the true devotee, the Reaper normally takes care of that.
Ana is for the pre-pubescent and those who successfully prolong youthful looks and latest styles into their 20's.
Eugenia done had her day.

I also know there's a famous argument on why not take away death fats if you're taking away Anas? My number one argument basically boils down to because nobody wants to fucking be fat lol.

HAES content hasn't been shown in research to cause measurable harm (yet), and some emerging research actually shows that watching a fat influencer - particularly watching one promote unhealthy food - can lead to a preference for healthier food in the viewer. (If you visit Anna O'Brien's thread, take note of how many people use Tubbo as a diet aid or encouragement not to go to Starbucks.)

I think fat activists do influence obese women in the way of "Hey i'm that size (or under) and i'm perfectly fine, attractive and healthy at this weight!" It's like people watching Hoarders: the people that keep a clean house already start massively detailing their house down to scrubbing baseboards and people that live in a mess say "Oh my house isn't that bad, so it's ok!"

Then there's fat and feeding fetish people that are spurred on by things like this, but just like the anas and the hoarders, they're all going to keep deluding themselves with their mental disorders either way.

I like broader-exposure Eugenia thread!

This was starting before the internet. It started with heroin chic. Or maybe earlier idk. FFS during the Victorian era people used to romanticize fucking tuberculosis and the associated weight loss. It just seems like the internet caused it because the internet was around to record it.

It's done been that way as far as we have human record and almost definitely before. People (not you) want to blame tiktok and shoot kids that walk through their yard and won't admit they did the same fucking shit when they were dumbass teenagers

Vera the Chooken did a vid, just off the thumbnail TikTok has been ordered to supply documents related to Eugenia.
Getting my coffee, then will sit and have a watch.

I don't think the choice is between "social media is fine and harmless to kids" (just like cocaine cough syrup in the Victorian era!) or "we should baby-proof the whole internet so it's safe for parents to ignore their kids' online activity."

The internet is a mass communication tool that's turned mostly into a giant advertising space. Most arguments over internet censorship are happening because companies want your kids on social media so they can advertise to them regardless of what it's doing to their brains. They'd rather the conversation remain focused on deplatforming certain individuals than limiting children's access to social media as a whole.

Thank you. I was beginning to wonder if everyone around here forgot we're target #1 for deplatforming/censorship.

I've just watched Vangelina's video and man this is fucked up. If you're a reason tiktok is considered harmful you should see a shrink. I'm not a big fan of shrinks but if you're this much mental you can't get more ill at this point.

Don't you have some law that if a person is mentally ill and dangerous to themselves or others they can be taken to a ward against their will? In Poland we have such law but it's hard to execute unfortunately.

Some comments say she's gonna die sooner rather than later and it's fuckin sad nevertheless.
The only help for her would be if she got a ban from the entire internet for a year so she coulda look at herself and analyze her life and think what she wanna do with herself apart from making teens more mental than they already are.

Depends on the state in the US, in California we can put someone in a 48 hour psychiatric hold if they're actively a danger to themselves or others but it's REALLY hard to end up in one. We like to dump our crazies out in the street to become everyone else's problem, someone like Eugenia isn't considered a public threat (even if her skelly physique might scare someone to death)

And she was already hit with that once. I imagine she has trust issues now so it would be much more difficult to pull off.

It's not happening in Connecticut. We require you be an immediate threat to yourself or others, slowly starving yourself falls squarely under "patient rights".

In Poland you would get caught for 48 hours and then a judge would come to you and allow shrinks to keep you longer for I guess 3 months? But firstly she'd need to be caught.

Then if the cycle of getting caught and leaving after 3 months would repeat your parents would go to court to incapacitate you. The problem is the red tape and that it's a lot of work but it's possible. I've heard of one incapacitated woman with anorexia.
