It's not exactly conflicting to hold the view that someone should face the punishment for murder, as a hallmark of law in society, while at the same time understand and sympathizing with his reasoning. But as you said, the whole point of such actions is that when people commit them despite the extreme punishment involved, it speaks to underlying problems motivating said vigilantism in the first place.
