The problem is also that Israel has to compromise operational needs with whatever the Americans make. The example that people love to use is that Israel has to completely strip the American planes that they buy to replace everything because the stock planes don't work for them. Israel had an indigenous fighter plane program with the Lavi but the Americans pressured the Israelis to stop because they didn't want to fund their own competition.
The Lavi was just a F-16 with canards tbh.
