A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Certainly a very daring tactic by Sunak... if he suspected McSweeney's plan then he's not only locked out the Tories from power for the next 20+ years but also Labour as well.

Oh, and he's more or less paved the way for Farage to be PM way before 2029.

Sadly, he won't be an MP after the next GE but I doubt he'll be too bothered - doubt he'll be remembered too much in history... a modern day Douglas-Home who was suited to better offices of state than being PM.

I don't know what's more entertaining, the amount of seethe in this post, or how 2/3rds of your list led to the creation of america, which means you're seething at you, seething at brits.

We didn't lose ww1 and don't turn around, but the amount of 'tribute' americans pay to 'far-off senators' in Israel would make Ghenkis Khan say "come on, this is a bit much".

In one of the more somewhat amusing stories out of this budget I did enjoy reading about the government funding Men in Lycra (I also enjoy the dour tone of 'before Reeves takes it away', got a giggle out of me). Funny how journoscum can recognise this scheme as frivolous waste but not any of the migrant schemes, oh well. We have to save somewhere. No more hi vis for you banker child.
 
Sara Sharif was in the news again today due to an inquiry. Very reminiscent of the culture that enables grooming gangs. If you're not familiar, I wouldn't recommend looking up but a brief tl;dr

    • Pakistani guy abuses his (half Polish) daughter for her entire life
    • Somehow despite being known to social services and entering foster system is returned to him
    • He makes her wear a Hijab slightly pre-adolescence, running theory is to cover signs of abuse
    • Kills her
    • Wife (not mother) is also very likely to blame due to forensic patterns she refused to be tested against

Afterwards fled to Pakistan, inexplicably returned. His excuse was that he didn't realise discipline to that extent wasn't allowed in the UK.

The backbone of this story is institutional across the board. It might be trepidation against being called racist, it may not. But the failures were institutional.

Main headline? "Neighbours too scared to report abuse in case they were called racist."

So they're obviously British. What about the Pakistani neighbours? What about the people at the Mosque? Did the Imam care? Whatever happened to these great tight-knit communities - isn't that why they all marry their cousins?

I cannot believe that the prevailing headline is - British people expected to stick their neck out while immigrant neighbours abuse child; entire Pakistani Muslim community somehow didn't notice. No - it's the responsibility of the fabled community watch to prevent foreigners from killing their children.

Fuck off.

Edit: forgot to mention he got the tuna can special (unfortunately lived) on new years day of this year so... silver linings.

Met investigating 'tens of grooming gang cases'

The commissioner warned against using "grooming gangs" as a catch-all term because offending includes abuse within families, in institutions, between peers and online.

He said the ethnicities of suspects varied and are "reflective of the diversity we see in the city".

Gosh I forgot entirely that sexual abuse happens outside of particular, large-scale orchestrated syndicates that would stop if we dealt with the specific types of people responsible. Thanks for reminding me about the other types of sexual abuse - you're totally right, sir! We'd better just put out more Netflix shows about white children being evil.

I'm surprised the word Pakistani was even used. I thought these were Asian grooming gangs, all taking place above a Chinese, Thai, whatever takeaway.

I know this is bait but I've never understood this angle, America has ethnic enclaves just like every western country, somalis in Minnesota and the entire south is either latino or black. In right wing american circles they like to say that the english of today are descended from those who were too scared to go and settle in america, call it cope but why would someone leave at that point the global superpower for a middling power in a country half a world away?
