They probably had to pay something big to avoid lawsuits from investors/partners.

Ian streaming four to five hours a day five days a weeks to make at most $1000 a month isn’t something a rich person does. He would just put out some slop on YouTube and take his time. He hates streaming. He’s even said it’s hard and he is a lazy person.

Like even watching small clips of Ian is hard to stomach for me, In german we have the term "Fremdscham" - the shame one feels for someone else's behaviour, one could approximate it to "cringe" but its deeper than that, like a massive feeling of embarrassment you get for another person's idiocy/creepiness.

The scene in the 2019 Joker movie, where Arthur goes to the comedy club and bombs hard with his material, you don't even hear a lot of his routine as it gets muted, but one sees the pained expressions in the faces of the audience, having to endure this performance.
