Nebula / Dave Wiskus and Standard Broadcast LLC - A Creator-Owned Streaming Service

The "free trial" is only for 3 days :story:

1762628360571.png

I guess if it lasted the standard 15 days, Nebula would run the risk having all its content viewed before the trial ran out (the most common complaint of Nebula is that for a monthly streaming service, it has very little content in its library).

I'm honestly failing to see the value prop of a service like nebula, especially when they might pad their library with videos that are on YouTube for free. What's the play because unless the owner is trying to pawn off the service to the next clueless investors, I don't this sham of a service will last 2 years

'cause like I've said before, Nebula is left wing Rumble - it only exists to grift off shitlibs, not become an actual Netflix/Disney+ competing streaming platform (hence, why nearly all Nebula exclusive content is eventually posted on Youtube).

Rumble: “YouTube bans conservatives → come here for free speech”→ Becomes MAGA echo chamber

Nebula: “YouTube buries meaningful content & demonetizes anything remotely controversial → come here for free speech”→ Becomes Breadtube echo chamber

Same pitch. Same curation. Same “we’re the victims of Big Tech” vibe. Just mirrored politics. Unlike Nebula, at least Rumble is free.

Tom Scott info crossposted from the Lindsay Ellis thread. Thank you for the links/info, @ Teriyakiburns:

She also didn't public acknowledge when Lindsay forced Tom Scott to not only apologise for working on a collaborative video with Jill, but to delete the video entirely with a second apology. Very likely, aside from the public shaming Lindsay engaged in, she also privately threatened to have Tom removed from Nebula, where he makes a fair amount of his content these days. It was a very stupid moment and I don't think Tom Scott ever really recovered from the fallout. He stopped making most of his youtube content soon afterwards, professing burnout, but he still makes plenty of content for Nebula.

Meanwhile, Jill is apparently even more of a TERF today, according to the top minds of reddit. Her crimes include not condemning harry potter computer games, not condemning evil terf harry potter author J K R*wl*ng, and thinking that maybe it's a bad idea to put hulking great men in womens' prisons.

TLDR, Lindsay Ellis may be directly responsible for Tom Scott stepping back from making Nebula/Youtube content (and resigning himself to just cameos on Jetleg) after throwing a shitfit 'cause Tom Scott collaborated in a video with stage choreographer/author Jill Bearup (who has been deemed an "evil terf" & persona non grata'ed by the Breadtube community). Tom made a long apology, but presumably that wasn't enough for the Breadtube crowd.

Nebula CEO is now sharing a form for creators who want to be on Nebula to say they're interested, going against the entire point of the service. (They don't want the creator's viewers to fill out the form which is odd).

Things must not be going great. I wonder if they've approached creators recently and been turned down so now they're trying to find people who desperately want to be on the site?

I love the PR doublespeak. It's not hard to tell if somebody wants to be on Nebula or not. If a creator hasn't reached out and asked to be on the platform, they certainly aren't going to fill out an interest form.

It's clear they're desperate for new talent for whatever reason.

Moviebob's time has come!

The "whatever reason" is stagnated growth, or even loss of subscribers. I can't imagine subscribing to a service specifically to get early content from video essayists. It's just not worth paying money for. I'm not sure why anyone thought this would be a sustainable business plan, especially as people will eventually move on as the political landscape changes. Breadtube is feeling hopelessly outdated at this point.

They are absolutely losing subscribers.

As I previously covered in this thread (back in the summer, right after Jessie Gender released that video accusing Critical Drinker & Nerdorotic of being a deep state Jewish Zionist agent provocateurs working for secret white supremacist leaders Ben Shapiro & Matt Walsh), there were redditors who discussed unsubscribing from Nebula due to its sudden shift into "gas the k!kes, race war now!" content. The Breadtubers who run Nebula, being a bunch of insular leftist elitists who rarely if ever interact with normies - made an "oopsie doopsie" and failed to realize that their barrage of increasingly insane anti-Zionist conspiracy theory video essays just came across as Groyper-nonsense to anyone without terminally online Breadtube brainrot. Folks were literally like "wow, those Nebula folks turned out to be Nazis - that's a shame. I guess I'll unsubscribe".

Also, the Nebula app itself is barely functional. Here's a list of random 1 star Nebula reviews criticizing the app's inability to properly function. Notice that many of the reviews are relatively recent, which implies Nebula either cannot afford, or is just too incompetent, to get its technical shit together:

While looking for the Nebula reviews, I actually found this Linus Tech Tips video where Linus discusses the nebulous finances of Nebula/implies it was never sustainable/is almost entirely funded by the lifetime membership sales (I apologize if it was posted on this thread before).

Nebula must really be up sh!t's creek, if Lindsay Ellis had to phone in a favor from PBS (alternatively Breadtube's glowie handlers did?) in order to shill Nebula (found on Twitter):

In other Nebula news, the soyfaced CEO seems to have changed his tune on the "creator applications" thing, and is now telling folks to send the application to content creators they want to see on the Nebula:

Ouch, imagine being criticized by Linus Sebastian, of all retards. That's like if DSP pointed out how you fucked up. Btw, he does have a point there.

Didn't Linus have his own streaming platform at one point? (It might still exist, fuck if I know I also think he sucks). It sounded like he was speaking from experience, about small streaming platforms not making any money.

He has Floatplane, which is apparently decently successful. LTT occasionally makes videos breaking down their financial situation and Floatplane apparently makes up 12% or so of their revenue. (If you trust Linus that is, but I don't see why he'd lie there. And it's been a while since I saw that video, and the number might be different)

They also helped William Osman with hosting his OpenSauce convention videos and some exclusive shows like a Taskmaster knock off. I think they do this as a white label service for people who want their own platforms.

@Null (I apologize, but I do believe this information warrants your attention/a possible front page feature)

A few minutes into an interview on PBS' Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, Nebula's soyfaced CEO Dave Wiskus casually revealed that he is personally good friends with the head of Youtube's algorithm department. (Note: can a more technically inclined Kiwi please archive this interview?)

This revelation has extremely interesting implications for the entirety of Breadtube (since a good chunk of Breadtube creators are also Nebula content creators). Is this "close friendship" influencing the Youtube algorithm to push Breadtube slop/promote Breadtube-aligned creators over others? Are Youtube creators critical of Breadtube facing hidden algorithm retaliation? 🤔 Breadtube continues to glow like nuclear waste

Aside from said algorithm bombshell, the interview itself is full of lulzy statements/further evidence Wiskus is an incompetent autist way in over his head (for example, Wiskus repeatedly rails against "Powerful Connected Hollywood Gatekeepers" like he thought no-one could ever piece together that he actually meant the Jews. An especially brilliant statement to make, when multiple redditors have recently discussed canceling their Nebula subscriptions due to mistakenly assuming Nebula got taken over by groyper content creators).

I thought nearly all of Breadtube were in absolute penury and constantly ebegging because their channels were making no money?

It might be indicative of why they were such algo candy for a while before it was dialed back (suspiciously around the era of many other corporations rolling back woke policies).

Either way, if manipulation did happen in the past it could happen again.

I think Jetlag would probably end up on Dropout if Nebula went under. It's odd, a year or so ago the CEO's of both companies did an interview where they sort of talked about how similar they were, and now Dropout has become fairly successful while Nebula seems to be sinking.

Dropout isn't my kind of comedy but they actually do straightforward comedy, the guy who runs it has talked about wanting to be a bit edgier/experimental. That "Dead-end Dreamhouse" show is a good example of Nebula's problem, it's not funny and goes out of its way to remind you of how bad the world is. They clearly spent some money on it, too.
Thats why i read this thread, because if you go by subs dropout and nebula are similar, but nebula is cooking the books with lifetimes and like you said the ceo is in over his head, meanwhile the ceo of dropout has basically been the ceo of dropout/college humor the last 20 years and outside of having to cut 90% of staff once it went independent, its been relatively the same company the last 20 years, plus because of its connections to vimeo and merch stores and all these other websites, dropout had a much easier time being independent.

dropout is the second largest independent streaming service after netflix and like the twelfth largest in the US overall, its actually fucking crazy, but until you research they really had a lot of massive advantages.

Breadtuber claims of "poverty" is a combination of Breadtubers pretending to be working class to make their socialist grift seem more legit (lest they repeatedly & routinely get called out like Hasan Piker, the son-of-Turkish multi-millionaires/apartment building slum lords) & making awful, room-temperature IQ financial decisions, like the Quartering.

For example, Lindsay Ellis frequently claims to be financially struggling (the funniest was when she did so just a few weeks after going on a luxury European vacation). Meanwhile, her husband is an aerospace engineer, and she makes a few grand a month (I'd imagine between 5-10 k) on Patreon via simp donations, & that's before her Nebula & Youtube earnings.

Either way, if manipulation did happen in the past it could happen again.
I think the Youtube influence is still happening. As I've previously covered on this thread, Nebula troon Jessie Gender has published (on both Youtube & Nebula) increasingly unhinged gas the k!kes, ""they control all world governments""" video essays that clearly go against the Youtube terms of service. & the first episode of Nebula's original content "Amy's Dead End Dreamhouse" (which was posted on both Youtube & Nebula) featured a character that endorsed committing domestic terrorism for LGBTQ+ rights - which again, definitely goes against the Youtube terms of service. Yet none of these videos have been removed or restricted.

Nick Fuentes & Alex Jones are banned from Youtube for endorsing racist/antisemitic conspiracy theories - meanwhile Breadtubers are free to go on multi-hour long unhinged ramblings arguing for a day of the rope to free the country from Trump ('cause they think MAGA is a secret Jewish plot) 😵‍💫 Note: not saying I support Nick Fuentes or Alex Jones - I just think it's weird Breadtubers have a free pass to say whatever insanity they want, when conservatives are held over the coals by Youtube moderators. If a conservative wants to be retarded & claim Jews are beholden to evil reptilian overlords from outerspace, than they should be allowed to speak their personal truth - especially if leftists (for example, Lindsay Ellis's space chicken book series) are getting away with stating the exact same thing!

Edit: wanted to add that many of the Nebula-Breadtubers are full fledged October 7th deniers/believe all Jewish victims & hostages were crisis actors. How is that any different from Alex Jones denying school shootings?
