The thing is, in Linkara's shitty skits his 'character' may actually fail something. One of the biggest problems in Project 7 was the fact how it was written so Phil always succeeded, no matter what. He may get in shitty situation, but it gets resolved like a minute later, thus P7 doesn't even qualify as "So Bad, It's Good" kind of show.

Wasn't Project 7 some Linkara-tier of cringy skits anyway? I became aware of DSP after he had cancelled that, but why the hell would people pay for this unhygienic, greasy, incompetent, unfunny idiot to write and act skits during his already awful gameplays? You need to be a complete idiot to invest a single cent on that prospect.

Thing is, Phil was never involved in the guts of the original Project 7. It was John, Howard, OJ, etc. that did the writing and Howard's guys Respect The Pact were the video editors who worked their asses off for no pay. Phil popped in to make stupid faces and say his lines, and then proceeded to take all the glory and money.
In the end, he was paid monthly in 2015 until August via Patreon to come up with a short trailer for Project 7 and the bum couldn't even do that. He essentially took approximately $10,000 and produced nothing.

There are two things I don't understand about youtube personalities.

1) How butthurt "reviewers" get when criticism is thrown their way. And it never fails, its people calling other people's work shit non-stop that go nuts the moment someone questions them or has a different opinion. Spoony is a prime example of this. I'll never forget how he started spamming the Rifftrax guys twitter because they dare to make a soundtrack mocking a movie he liked.

2) The push to do skits. You need a team of writers and an actual editorial process. Hell, you need someone just to manage timing and resource constraints. And it always obvious these folks have no fucking idea what it takes to actually do stuff like this because you see these pie in the sky goals with laughable low funding simply because these people have no idea how much work it takes to generate actual content as oppose to just lazy streaming shit with someone ranting as a voice over.

For DSP to actually make Project 7 work, he would have to have a dedicated crew and someone to kill bad ideas. And he would have to open himself up to a LOT of criticism for it to work.

Its the whole reason why youtube is flooded with movie/game reviews, reaction videos, and LP's. They are the easiest, cheapest things to do. Very few people go to the effort of creating actual real, new content because of the work and costs involved.

Everyone wants to be the MST3K guys. Every Internet movie critic thinks he's Joel Hodgson. They don't get that even the MST3K guys, shoestring budget or not, had a writing team and an actual editorial process.

It's sort of the video equivalent of why Hunter S. Thompson imitators generated so much absolutely shitty "journalism," not getting that HST himself edited and re-edited and asked for input and put a lot of effort into making his prose look as crazy and spontaneous as it actually often wasn't. (If you read his letters, it becomes very clear he put a lot more work into his work than he generally admitted.)

Not only that, MST3k didn't just steal content. They secured the rebroadcast rights, which mean they had to get permission and the fucking paid money to the owners of the property.

And I totally agree with your point on HST. Dear god that man put a tremendous amount of work into his writing. People tend not to recognize that the stark divide between HTS the person and HTS the character. The key think to gonzo journalism was that HTS was still a fucking polished journalist.

I cannot stand someone that is portrayed in the vein of HTS or "Gonzo Journalism" because nine times out of ten, they are trying to be edgy to overcome the complete lack of journalism skill. The only person that comes close to HTS is Matt Taibbi and its because he is a good journalist and not someone trying to be a fucking character.

This is pretty much the only way Project 7 is watchable.

Did a minor quick check on the P7 crew and it's Rambo is the one doing best of Rambo, Howard and RtP, still releasing videos that get about 1 000 views atleast, while Howard pretty much have stoped, 2 videos in the last week are the first in 2 years, and RtP died out 4 years ago.

Howard sure has changed... (2 years ago!)

At least he put his money on fun things rather than figurines and fast food like Phil!

I used to have to explain a lot of stuff to young people when I was in the military. I mean the US kind of does a terrible freaking job teaching personal finance in high schools. Hell, i had kids show up that were functionally illiterate and they all had at least a high school diploma.

Like really basic stuff, like how interest works, credit cards, loans, how to balance a checkbook. A lot of these kids were from all over. and the military for a lot of them, was the first regular paycheck they ever had. A lot of these kids just had no freaking background at all and were completely ignorant. And it was a big problem for me because the kids of mine that became problems...usually it tracked down to bad personal finance decisions. So I spent a lot of downtime in the military just explaining stuff.

DSP is FAR worse than even my most ignorant junior guy. At least for a lot of people, if you don't know any thing, you generally have an idea that you got no idea of what you are doing and you seek out help. DSP knows just enough to think he is the smartest dude in the room so he can tune out everyone. He is a salesperson's wet fucking dream. The perfect mark.

I really think I could sell anything to DSP with little or no effort.

Rambo is pretty great. He's not a comedy master, but he's funny enough, charming, and humble. The DSP podcast they did made me respect both of them a lot more.

I still can't really sit through Schnozz-man and Holepunch though.

I like Rambo's and Howard's voices as well in their own way.
You're correct, they're both eclectic and thoughtful who have actually grown up and matured these past several years.
Contrast that with a certain Mr. Burnell who has actually regressed back into being a teenager.

I watch a video like this from 2009 and I see a dramatically more mature and composed individual. Yes, he was still an asshole but at least there was a semblance of humility and the ability to let the negative comments slide with a thicker skin.

I watch a video like this from 2009 and I see a dramatically more mature and composed individual. Yes, he was still an asshole but at least there was a semblance of humility and the ability to let the negative comments slide with a thicker skin.

He's a grown man in this video and he doesn't sound like his balls have dropped yet. Maybe he traded mental maturity for physical maturity?

I believe that was somewhere around 2005, so he would have been 23 at the time. I can somewhat forgive a person that young and probably living with his parents for acting like a teenager. It's the fact that a 27-year-old Phil is twice as mature as 35-year-old Phil which leads me to conclude empirically that he, unlike John Rambo and Howard, has emphatically regressed.
