I think the meme war has been happening for a long time now. It intensified as years passed and only intensified to the point that it impacted real life when Trump became a presidential candidate. It only gets worse from there.

Previously it was a cold war, with sleeper cells making surgical strikes with pepes from a distance, and inscrutable forces guiding greentexts from the shadows. While there were always casualties, the public was kept safe because mutually assured deconstruction meant nobody was willing to make a move in the open. Now however, it is a hot war, and all the other wars are going to start checking it out.

the word meme was originally just referring to an infective thought that could be passed from person to person; like a gene in biology, a meme is a psychological gene.
until the word was coined, propaganda was the word for political versions of this. I love this art form. modern memes fit into its history perfectly.
