Legend of Zelda thread - Lorefags GTFO!

Then you get Tears of the sloppy seconds...
It still pisses me off how they baited a sequel with investigating Vah Ruta, and then just ignore all of that, wiping it from existence for no reason.

Something else Echoes of Wisdom did better was replacing terms. In that game, the Triforce is the Prime Energy, and that makes sense, because that's what the Triforce is in common words. Compare that to calling Ganondorf The Demon King constantly and replacing the cool aesthetics with knockoff kanji.

I mentioned this in the Metroid thread, after the apparent shitshow that's the latest Prime game, but I bought my family a PS3 for Christmas this year, and I'm going to take the opportunity to play all of those games I missed. I can't see a single reason to buy a Switch 2, and I never even bought the first Switch. My buddy whose Switch I play can't see a reason to buy one either. I'll still go to see the Zelda movie, I've got a bet with him on whether or not the line "Well excuse me, princess." will be in the film, and who will say it, but it's getting harder and harder to give a shit about these games, and it's not just getting older.

I saw some people elsewhere bitching about that, but I didn't really have a reaction to it when I was playing since I was playing in Japanese, and the equivalent was just Japanese for "great power". It felt more like a general description than a proper noun term.

Technically all the games do this in Japanese, but usually it gets translated as something like lord of evil or whatever.

Haven’t really gotten to see enough of Zelda in the amount of TOTK that I played.

All I can say is that her BOTW incarnation is one of my favorite portrayals of her, which may be a hot take around these parts. Honestly, she’s an example of a female character done right in this day and age.

Zelda is once again sidelined for the entire game, she gets zero development with Link, she gets even less characterization, and her "epic sacrifice" is once again undone with no lasting consequences for her actions. People wanted to hype up the dragon fight like it was the best thing ever and I'm just like, "There are no true stakes here, this wasn't earned, this is all show and no substance." Then the game ends with Zelda making the same damn speech she made at the end of BOTW, "With your help friends, we can Make Hyrule Great Again!" Riveting... You don't even need to mention her put on limey accent, her character is rudderless.
And keep in mind this emotional and narrative payoff only works if the player fucks around and doesn't make Link actually do his fucking job by going straight back to Hyrule Castle and shoving his boot in Ganondorf's ass since finding all the tears means straying far from the beaten path.

Previous games like Majora's mask do similar things, but they also don't make it so you can just walk over tot he final dungeon. It's more like "yeah you could just do the dungeons and beat the game that way but that's like only a small chunk of the actual shit in the game why would you fucking do that" in other Zelda games that operate on a bunch of heavily optional story content.

It was funny seeing what game journos didn't even play the fucking game because they'd be like "oh this is the most open ended zelda! link and zelda have practically no backstory in this game why don't they make link female already so we can have wholesome lesbian friends!" or some goofy nonsense. Meanwhile an entire chunk of the game is going to random glowy spots on the map to regain your memories of zelda force feeding you a frog amongst other character antics on top of link's PTSD nightmares about everything dying.

what? there's a quest, one of the first, that shows you, on the map (well its a map made of stone in game) exactly where every Tear is, and in what order to do them in.
you literally cannot fucking miss them, beyond that, they are glowing shit on the countryside, in places you have to go to do the dungeons.

the game makes it clear you aren't ready to fight Ganondorf without the suped up Master Sword at the onset too.

"yeah you could just do the dungeons and beat the game that way but that's like only a small chunk of the actual shit in the game why would you fucking do that"
There's also the fact that the difficulty curve in MM is very obviously designed with sidequesting in mind. I'm loath to bring up Game Grumps here but Arin tried to facetank his way through just the dungeons and got filtered hard by Gomess. He actually quit for a couple of years and did all the sidequests when he did return.

I’ll go against the grain around here again, and say that I thought the memory fragments in BOTW were actually pretty good, and did a lot to flesh out Zelda as a character.
Problem is that the other half of the totally-not-a-romance is a blank wall, so the main person she's supposed to bounce off of does her no favors. Nintendo needs to just fucking bite the bullet and make the various future Links real characters.

The Links have already been real characters since the games jumped to 3d over 20 years ago.
You know what I mean. Like having actual personalities aside from vague "he's nice/heroic" kind of thing. Let him actually speak, let him express himself. For fuck's sake don't have him find out his girlfriend turned into a dragon and just stare blankly as a response.

He literally expresses himself constantly even without speaking in any game that's not botw/totk, I don't think him talking would fix the issue of lack of characterization given the recent track record of talking characters in Nintendo games. Also I am once again goign to point out tEnglish version of BOTW scrubbed links' characterization and replaced his journal entries with generic "YOU ACCOMPLISHED THIS NOW YOU CAN DO THIS AND GO HERE" shit.

mildly related/unrelated but I fucking will never stop hating how video game review/lore people frame this shit that's meant to be a comedic scene as spoooky scary man bad shit. It literally has that specific comedic timing of the music briefly cutting out as he realizes you didn't get the legendary mask back from skull kid and proceeds to understandably freak out about it.

There's also the obvious aspect of him being a comedic sidequest NPC from the previous game and the game literally expects you to recognize him as the same guy, with him outright saying he's the guy from the previous game's happy mask shop.

It'd make cutscenes less awkward. Like they made the excuse that Wild Link was silent in his old life because of a knightly duty or whatever. But it gets to a point where he just comes across as an unfeeling asshole. His departed friends as ghosts appear to say their goodbyes and wish him luck on his mission...and he just stares at them. Doesn't say a word, has no final words for them. Memories or not, it just comes across as bizarre. Any cutscenes he's in feel awkward because he just stares at whoever's talking, or if there's more characters, they just talk around him and he acts like a brick wall because that's basically all he is. If these games are going to get more cinematic, then having the main character refuse to participate and change along with the games surrounding him is just stupid. It was one thing when the games were just text boxes, but actually hearing characters pour their hearts out to Link and getting no response is awkward.

And spoilers for Prime 4 ahead for those who care.

The new Metroid game shows how retarded non-talking main characters are with Samus having people directly speaking to her and asking her questions, but she refuses to say a single word. Even in scenes where her teammates seemingly die, she can't muster the ability to utter even a "No!" in response. The end is the worst, where her teammates are sacrificing themselves for her, and she can't be bothered to speak to them. It's just...awful and needs to die out as a concept.
