Movie & TV Show Recommendations

Only got around to watching one Christmas movie this year, John Landis' early 80's comedic masterpiece Trading Places (1983).

unnamed.png

I watched it last as a child and couldn't remember much from it but it is one of my girlfriend's favorite movies, was an absolute hoot. It stars Eddie Murphy as a criminal bum and Dan Aykroyd as the manager of a commodity trader bank who get to switch places over a nature vs. nurture bet Aykroyd's bosses make. It gets very silly in its third act but manages to stay funny throughout its almost 2 hour runtime. Has lots of shit that wouldn't fly today, liberal use of the word faggot, Dan Aykroyd in full, jamaican Blackface and other things that make me go full "Yep, they don't make 'em like that anymore". Even has some nude 80's titties in it, including the very nice pair of Jamie Lee Curtis, who had a stunning body at the time this was shot (shame about that face though).

This scene killed me stone dead, Eddie Murphy going full african is just 5 stars:

Also rewatched cult shlock highschool horror classic The Faculty (1998)by Robert Rodriguez for the umpteenth time.

Huge guilty pleasure movie of mine. Stars a slew of 90's double-A and B-listers, Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, Robert Patrick (doing a nice T-1000 2.0 job) and motherfucking Usher amongst them. It's a nice riff on the Invasion of the Body Snatchers formula (which is mentioned a couple of times in the movie itself), has some very cool practical effects and gnarly 90's CGI and is just very entertaining all over. Don't expect too much if you decide to watch this but if you went to highschool in the 90's it will hit some nice beats.

Stardust (2007)

This is a spectacular movie, that really drives home that romantic push. It's a bit soppy to some, but I absolutely love it.

With actors such as Ian McKellen, Peter O'Toole, Henry Cavill, Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro, amongst others, it's truly a movie that brims with talent.
I adored Stardust, it's really incredible, but the crossdressing homo captain really fouls the whole thing to the point I wouldn't be comfortable showing it to a kid.

This is understandable.

Back when, my friend's sister commented the movie, and she had the exact same contention as you for why the movie sucks.

I never really bought it though, for I regard Robert De Niro being flamboyant to be a plus altogether.
It's even better now, years after the fact, when it's evident that Robert De Niro is a stooge of the Democratic Party. It all just fits together.

I do love this movie though. It's one of the few movies that dared portray one of the initial womanly love interests in the movie in a somewhat negative light; all in favor of portraying the actual womanly love interest who's sensible and beautiful as being the ultimate prize for the male protagonist. Such gender roles aren't likely to be portrayed in any movie today.

It's also a great movie on itself, regardless of any gender-role-shenanigans.

It's just a cozy movie altogether! :)

Finished e05 of "The Boy's Word", holy shit what an amazing show this is. Did not expect it would go this dark. The cast really is something, too.

OMG has anyone ever seen or heard of Hotel Torquay? I binged every episode yesterday. I love me some posh British white trash reality tv shows! How to get a Council House, Life on the Dole, Can't Pay We'll Take it Away, The Bailiffs Are Coming, etc. Oh and the Great British Benefits Handout and all that delicious Supersise vs SupperSkinny bullshit and the rest...
Mark Jenkins is a national treasure. You British fags better be willing to throw yourself on top of a hand grenade for that man!

Edit:
Also rewatched cult shock highschool horror classic The Faculty.

Season of the Witch (2011)

I remember enjoying this movie quite a bit. It has a pretty stupid and historically inaccurate opening ( The middle east crusades were already over by this time and the entire concept of crusaders "turning in their badges" and going on the run is legit retarded.) But once the actual story starts it's a legit fun concept. Nic Cage and Ron Pearlman are ex-crusaders charged with getting a suspected witch to a monastery and they gotta deal with all kinds of dangers and supernatural plague stuff along the way.

Chrisphor lee has a cameo as a plague victim which was cool.

I don't want to shit up the thread with more praise for "The Boy's Word" but i just got done watching the final episode and the show (Mini-series really) is just that good. Easily the best show i've watched ever since Better Call Saul ended and i picked up Mr.Inbetween on a recommendation from this thread. The casting is absolutely stellar, i don't know if any of these actors are famous in Russia but they should be, the level of acting on display does not need to hide from some of the better US shows, cinematography, as @Officer Barbrady already pointed out in his post recommending the series is very good all throughout (Again, same level as most modern, good US shows) and the story is top stuff. Episode 5 to 7 are pure slav depression kino. I loved how the show ended, one of the more realistic endings to a show with this kind of theme. MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD, that confrontation between Andrei and Marat in the final episode is one of the most realistic fight scenes i've ever watched, any non-athlete will get gassed in virtually no time in a physical confrontation like they did and that checking out their knuckles afterwards where your mind is going "Shit, did i break anything?" is too fucking real.END OF SPOILER

All in all this was some top shelf stuff, absolutely loved it, can only urge anyone to watch this, already recommended it to everyone in my friend circle who's into the same shit i am into. As i said in one of my previous posts, if Netflix or Prime would pick this up it would explode over night and end on any "Best shows of the Year" list, no hyperbole. Kudos to the two dudes who sat down and made the subs for this, they were excellent, leaving russian slang intact in places, annotating other stuff, very nice job.
the waterboy kicks ass
I watched that at the cinema here in Germany and it had an outrageously shitty dub even by german standards. They decided to let Sandler be dubbed by some shitty comedian that was popular at the time, some german dude whose schtick was parodying how german-born turks behaved and spoke (super broken, "ghetto" german) at the time, absolutely terrible.
I hate how i even remember the lyrics of the hook, truly dark times.

Saw Kill Bill the Whole Bloody Affair in 70mm. Was actually really good, even though you have to sit through all the credits to get to the fairly silly 'lost chapter' which isn't explained at all, more or less a Fortnite cutscene. Was weird for sure, I didn't even know for sure what it was until after. It's a full 4.5 hours including the intermission credits, and lost chapter, and I think it ends this Thursday but seeing anything on 70mm now is a treat. I always liked 1/2, and I think are the last 'truly good' Tarantino movies before he and Lawrence fell out.

Interesting to see all together finally in a theater.
I’ve never really watched any Tarantino movies. With his recent controversy and getting half off on a streaming service I decided to give Inglorious Basterds a chance, and it was captivating. It was so suspenseful, especially the performance by Christoph Waltz who played the nazi detective guy, bone chillingly good and 100% deserved the Oscar.

Then I went to see what else was available by Tarantino and saw Once Upon A Time In Hollywood… And it fucking sucked. The worst thing a director can do is make me feel like I’m wasting my time and there were so many pointless scenes throughout the movie that it actually pissed me off by the end of it. So many fucking scenes with close ups of women’s bare feet, I get it, you’re a pervert 🙄

Now I’m not too sure if I should watch the older ones like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, I need some time to forget the feet scenes first *sigh*

His first ones, including Jackie Brown to Kill Bill are the top. After Kill Bill they started dropping off quite a bit, so you're safe with those. I mean Pulp Fiction is probably the best of the 90s, and that's a competitive decade. Once Upon was pretty lousy. Hateful 8 is a pretty good little mystery thriller too. Basteds is sort of in the middle of his lineup.

The only one without any feet at all is Reservoir Dogs and that's only cause it's an all-male cast lol. Maybe Hateful 8 didn't either, hard to remember. Jackie Brown not much if any. I can barely remember anything about Django except Leo has a few amazing scenes.

Jackie Brown is great. The book it's based on (Rum Punch) is pretty good, too. It was probably fairly easy to adapt the story into a screenplay.

Reservoir Dogs is phenomenal, also no feet scenes that I can remember.
Jackie Brown not much if any.
I can't remember any, but I wouldn't be shocked if there is at least one. Once you know it, you can't unsee it.

Also it had a phenomenal soundtrack, and despite being a tribute to blaxploitation films, he actually showed respect to the medium. I'm pretty sure putting Pam Grier as the lead has a lot to do with his permanent n-word pass.

Tarantino has always had a phenomenal ability to find actors whose careers are in the doldrums or even nearly over, and then get the best performance of their lives out of them. Robert Forster was phenomenal in Jackie Brown too. David Carradine in Kill Bill. John Travolta in Pulp Fiction.

The man is like the Jesus of Lazarus reviving careers.
I can barely remember anything about Django except Leo has a few amazing scenes.
Fun fact: Leo couldn't bring himself to say "nigger" and needed intense bullying from Samuel L. Jackson to be able to say it without cringing.

Oh, here's at least one source for that.
"Say that shit, motherfucker."

I my self really liked The Expanse in spite of certain aspects of it(mainly how all the good actors/characters were made secondaries to the two most boring fucks on the planet, Jim Holden and Naomi Nagata) up until an entire season was dedicated to the character I hate the most, Naomi, and her equally unlikeable son and ex-husband.
When it resulted in an entire hour long episode of Naomi sobbing, screaming and yelling while trapped on an abandoned space ship I checked out. I absolutely loathe this character.
I generally tell people to stick to season 1 and 2 with The Expanse. Watching past season 2 is like insisting on staying in the shower when the hot water is running out. Season 3 is watchable but the writer was starting to pull things out of his ass by then and the script and plot in the show begins to deteriorate. You can only throw your leads into so many save-the-world/life-and-death situations before it gets tiresome.

It's funny you mention Naomi being stuck on the freighter because that's when I decided the shark was firmly jumped too. Her (clearly retarded in real life) giga-lipped nigger son can't emote his way out of a paper bag when his whole arc rides solely on an emotional conflict. I also can't forgive them for giving Drummer such a wet fart of an aftermath. They do get some things right in the later seasons, like the Ring Gate upsetting everyone's livelihoods and setting their sense of purpose adrift. But they fumble the ball and don't pick it up and it just gets cringier and cringier.

Post Ring-Gate should've been an inversion of everything in the story. Whoever's on bottom should've been on top, everyone scrambling to handle their new power or their complete loss of it, etc.

Ron Pearlman

HAY LIL DONNIE BOY I PAID A HOMELESS WITCH TO SHIT IN MY MOUTH AND SEND ME TO HELL WHADYA THINK OF THAT DRUMPF???????

I’ve watched Season of the Witch three or four times (including seeing it in theater when it came out) and every single time feels like watching it for the first time because it is the most forgettable entertaining movie I’ve ever seen.

It came out the same year as Ironclad. An entirely forgettable plot with an entirely forgettable lead in James Purefoy who is outshone by almost every other fucking actor in the film, including Vladimir Kulich once again reprising his role as Large Viking Man.

Still a fun movie. Paul Giamatti reprises his own role as Paul Giamatti Screaming At Everyone.
