'No Stupid Questions' (NSQ) Internet & Technology Edition

I am on Windows 10 and lately (since two months or so) i noticed the response times, like when opening my Download folder, opening programs etc. are much slower than they were before. Like, i open the file explorer, click on the "Downloads" folder and it takes 2-3 seconds to display any files in that folder when it used to display files instantly. Startup also takes noticeably longer sometimes. It's not a constant problem, it happens randomly and i have no idea what brought this on. My biggest problem is that when i watch films in VLC the film stops at random intervals, always for around 2-3 seconds, glitches out with a ton of artefacts on screen and then resumes playback which is driving me insane.

I thought it might be the SSD but Samsung Magician says it is in good health. I tried reinstalling VLC, i tried out nightly builds, problem persists. I have no problems when watching anything in Firefox, like on YT. Haven't installed any new programs (apart from the aforementioned VLC builds) nor added/removed any hardware. I tried using different peripherals (i used to have an issue in the same vein on my laptop where it turned out the shitty mouse and its dongle were the source of the problem), tried running without being connected to the internet, nothing changed.

Edit: I am moving some files from my C: to my D: and i just noticed that the transfer speed is being quite erratic. Is it the SSD after all?

Forgot to mention it above, the C: drive, from where i usually play my video files, is a Samsung 850 EVO.

Edit 2: So, i did a couple of things and i got the VLC issue fixed. Can't tell what did the trick, though. Reinstalled VLC on my D: drive (which is some no-name 500gb SSD), increased the file caching from 1000 to 15000 in VLC's Codec settings under "advanced" and also deactivated hardware acceleration in VLC. Been watching a movie for 45 minutes now and everything is as it should be.

When i try to record scenes from a video file i have open in VLC via the "Record" feature it outputs .mp4 files that have audio only when i open them with VLC despite the videos i record them from are working just fine in the player. Google search only gives me jeetslop and AI answers that do nothing to help me with this issue.

how much of a hassle is it to do a win11/chrome dual boot?
at work we have a use for displaying images on a tv
the tv is a picky bitch and only runs windows at like, 640x480 or similarly wtf caveman resolution at the wrong aspect ratio
for some reason my chromebook shits out to it perfectly fine 16:9 and nice
"my chromebook" here is an decade old pos spare that barely works and freezes every few hours, but that's fine for "TODAYS SPECIALS" type static image use needed
I don't care THAT much about having the chromebook, but the company has a fuckload of windows tablet/laptop convertible guys literally just sitting around collecting dust and this would be a good use.

but I try not to annoy IT with stupid shit because sometimes I do lean on them for very esoteric internet shit and I value them listening when I request stuff
if it's like, five minutes of buttons, reboot twice, five minutes of buttons, reboot and you're done I might lean on IT to get it, but if it's a real afternoon yeah nah fuck that

Chrome OS is built on top of Linux and it is most likely using Linux drivers, so I bet if you just installed mint or something on a few of those old computers, it would output at the correct resolution. That'd be way easier than trying to install Chrome OS on them.

Is there an all online video editor where I can upload a video (or better yet just paste a URL if it's online), cut out parts I don't want in different places, then download the trimmed video? With no "Subscribe to Premium" or "please sign in" bullshit? Preferably one which doesn't require latest version of "Google Chrome" to work at all either?

It could be anything, the target SSD might be out of SLC memory and show you how truly slow it's MLC is. It might also be both drives being on the same SATA controller connected to the CPU with a single PCI-e lane causing a pipe to get clogged.

Boomer powerlevel: In the age of PATA drives you could get abysmal transfers if both drives were on the same cable due to context switch overheads (not to mention if you forgot to enable UDMA/disable busmaster).

In the year 2026, is there any way to purchase a 1TB M.2 SSD for actually affordable prices? I really regret not buying them earlier. I was contemplating buying a broken laptop and harvesting the SSD, but those usually come with only 256gb, and they've usually already been harvested anyway. Oh well.

Do you really need to record them? If you want to trim or save pieces/segments of a video I recommend AVIDemux. It's free and exports as fast as your SSD allows. Just make sure that these are your settings:

No transcoding/encoding necessary.

Just mark In where you want the clip to start and mark Out where it should end then press ctrl+s.

Sweet, gonna have a look at that later. I only need to record the odd clip for when i post in "Movie & TV Show Recommendations" and this looks like it's perfect for that. I fucked around with VLC's recording feature some more yesterday, it seems to do fine if i record ~5 second parts but anything longer than that and it only puts out the audio, despite the output file being .mp4. Thanks.

Edit: I now realize i am a huge dumbass, girlfriend got CapCut Pro for her YT stuff on her laptop and i could've been using that all along. Sometimes i really am disappointed with myself :story:

im having a fucking dumbass moment on this site and could use some help in sorting something out

so long story short ive been customising my profile and will probably be customising it again soon because that shits fun, anyway, vegeta's third testicle is currently stuck under my avatar and i suspect it's because i technically do not have an invitation code, as this account might have been around before these measures come in. do i need to now somehow get one of this invitation code things to be able to edit it now? did i fuck something up? i'm not as tech literate as i used to be no more and the boomer wave has come for me, too.

any help welcome, my avatar is currently a sick image of a wizard doing a kickflip as payment

You can use your password in reverse as the invitation code
