Last month, it was comedian Kathy Griffin's infamous beheaded Donald Trump photo that pit the president's supporters against Hollywood.

Now it appears that another Tinseltown figure, actor Johnny Depp, has entered the fray, making controversial comments about assassinating the commander in chief.

While at the Glastonbury Festival on Thursday in the English county of Somerset, Depp brought up the president prior to introducing his 2004 film, "The Libertine."

"Can we bring Trump in?" Depp says to the crowd, which responds with widespread boos, according to videos of the remarks. "No, no, no. You misunderstand completely. I think he needs help. And this is going to be in the press and it'll be horrible. But I like that you are all part of it. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president? I want to clarify: I'm not an actor. I lie for a living however it's been a while. Maybe it's about time."

It's possible that Depp was referencing actor John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

In a statement to ABC News, the Secret Service said: "We actively monitor open source reporting, including social media networks, and we evaluate potential threats. For security reasons, we cannot discuss specifically nor in general terms the means and methods of how we perform our protective responsibilities."

ABC News has asked both Depp's publicist and the White House for comment.

so of course this causes major butt hurt for the trump fan boys

It does baffle the mind to think that famous, wealthy people will talk in very open terms about desiring the murder of a sitting president.

Not sure why people get so worked up about an actor saying something stupid, though, but both Trump lovers and haters are good for some quality salt.
The best part is many of the people outraged over this had no problem with Ted Nugent saying the same thing about Obama.

While I am not up on my Neugent history and had to go re-read the statements, he DID get investigated by the SS as a result of his comments. While "suck on my machine gun" is pretty close to a threat, it doesn't quite rise to the same level as the more open call for violence of Depp, nor is it as viscerally vulgar as the Kathy Griffin beheading, which was the last time he got dredged up in the news to trot out arguments about moral equivalency and whatnot. Dumb as it is, "suck my machine gun" sounds more like "suck my dick", and outside of a few edge scenarios where you may literally be requesting someone to suck your dick, that is more of a taunt or insult than you actually soliciting for oral sex.

The end result is they're all fucking exceptional and looking for coverage.

He did make statements saying that Obama should be tried for treason hung. Which can easily be seen as a call for violence given the history of lynching and Obama being a black man.

Let me preface that I don't disagree with you (and I think Neugent and Depp are both idiots and hope that I never hear cat scratch fever ever again), but that were one guilty of treason, that is an offense which is specifically outlined in the US Constitution and is punishable by the death penalty per US code. The very language used in the US Constitution is reflective of the punishment used against treasoners per common law and serves to provide additional protection for the families of those accused... which indicates that the writers of that document were very much in favor of the death penalty for those such who were convicted.

To convict one of treason and then impose the death penalty upon them is significantly different systematically from stating that an actor needs to assassinate a sitting president. One is a call to action inciting violence; one is a call to action regarding a criminal proceeding and the accompanying punishment. One is explicitly illegal- well, explicit may be a stretch, but every high schooler has to read about Brandenburg v. Ohio. The other involves an additional complication which would be constrained by the legal process and is in essence no different from saying that a murder suspect should be tried and executed.

Pedantic, perhaps, and I doubt they were filtered by anything other than luck and fortuitous phrasing by Neugent, but again I will point out- the US secret service actually did investigate his statements and did not find that he had threatened the president in am actionable manner. Additional point of clarity: Neugent states that both clinton and Obama should be tried and hung. Clinton is obviously very white, and hanging has not been limited to those of negro heritage in this country, despite historical revisionism regarding the extent and power of the KKK and associated lynch mobs. In the context if a spiel about benghazi and inclusive of Clinton, it is hard to legitimize that as a racist statement itself (not inclusive of other statements he may and probably did make that likely were).

Randoms shooting off oblique comments about the president is nothing unusual, but giving a speech at a public event and stating that "maybe it's about time" for an actor to assassinate a president is just barely skirting inciting violence... especially since it comes on the heels of a superlib putting some republican congressmen in the hospital.

Expect the same calls for boycotts and whatnot that always accompany this stuff, but also consider that Depp is an actor in a popular (but long in the tooth) Disney series of considerable acclaim who was speaking to a presumably more erudite crowd at a film festival; Ted Neugent is a crazy redneck.

This is all a further symptom of Trump derangement syndrome, which will provide us more salt than all the oceans of the world for the next 3-7 years.

A bit of context for non Brits (I'm not in any way endorsing what he said or anything) :
Glastonbury is an openly left leaning event (They've even got Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of centre-left party Labour going on the main music stage tomorrow and every year also have a stage called Left field which combines left wing activism with music) so Depp was probally pandering to the crowd at the movie area and knew he'd get free media publicity too ("By the way, this is going to be in the press and it'll be horrible").
