Yeah it still retains a lot of popularity, enough so that it has had two successful theatrical film releases in the past few years. Yes, its very much children's horror or "gateway horror" is probably a more accurate descriptor. It's a sort of sanitized & pg-13 horror that will act as a gateway to the horror genre. But FNAF spawned an entire genre called "mascot horror" that revolve around "mascot" characters inspired by Chuck E Cheese that began as friendly characters but have been turned "evil" & children are the primary audience for these games. Other games in the genre are Poppy's Playtime, Bendy & the Ink Machine, and many others. It's a genre that's been quite overexposed

The more I hear about it, the more it feels like today’s kid-friendly slasher. Growing up, I had Predator, Aliens, the Friday the 13th movies, and Halloween. I had no business watching those that young, but I did. So it makes sense that this is kind of the modern equivalent for them. It definitely feels more cringe to me, but I can see why kids latch onto that kind of horror.

Edit: I can’t believe I didn’t bring up Lovecraft. I didn’t get into his books until I was older and started appreciating reading more. The man was on another level. He gave one of his cats a pretty based name. If you know, you know…

Yeah it's definitely similar but mascot horror is definitely more aimed at kids than those. I had a similar experience with Child's Play (Chucky), Freddy Kreuger, & Terminator, I definitely shouldn't have been watching. The other gateway horror film series that you'd be familiar with....that Id compare to FNAF is Gremlins & Gremlins 2, very much films made for a younger audience but with some darker themes than typical children's fare, limited violence & gore, and cutesy creatures.

I didn’t even see Gremlins until I was an adult, and I ended up liking it. They’re fun movies. I get your point, though. To be honest, if I had kids, I’d probably feel more at ease with them watching something like Friday the 13th than getting sucked into mascot horror on the internet. I’m not saying everyone who makes that content for kids is a sicko, but the internet today is nothing like it was in the early 2000s. It’s just a whole different world now, you know? Kids are way more vulnerable online now, so I’d rather have mine watching classic horror movies than some guy making mascot horror content on Jewtube.

Yeah other similar movies to the FNAF vibe would be like say.....the works of Tim Burton, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, etc. I get what you're saying and the enviroment online is certainly perelious for children but FNAF is mostly harmless I'd say especially compared to something like Friday the 13th with on-screen murder, visceral gore & plenty of nudity but tbf I think both are ultimately not very harmful. If you were talking about online games Roblox I would 100% agree though
