Is the cello the gothiest instrument? Discuss.
Optional rivals include the pipe organ, drum machine, and electric guitar with distortion cranked to 11.
Rasputina is such a throwback. Hipster pop-goth stuff from 2000s?
Cello is one of the greatest & the most gothic of the stringed instruments. I’ve long held that cello is utterly beautiful, & as far as strings go, it’s likely in the top spot, (though the violin/ fiddles & guitar/ bass guitar are all top tier, too). Cello is safely in the top three of strings, and my first choice, (though I’m better with guitars & bass than cello & violins.)
Pipe organ, synths, drum machines, & regular drums are all included too. I think any instrument can fit any genre. Putting just drums, maybe a flute, or a pipe organ together, with the right beat, you get a dirge. What’s more goth than a dirge? Speaking of the dirge, Rasputina cleverly used a dirge beat in their rhythm of their cover of
Wish You Were Here.
Rasputina began in the 90’s, but got bigger a few years after the turn of the 21st century. They really are a throwback, though still going to the best of my knowledge. A mix of goth rock and other genres, Rasputina’s leader, Melora Creager claimed her music as a new form created, cello rock. I group it in my head as 90’s goth-esque art music, I guess. They get play on goth radio, at goth clubs, etc, so seemed thread appropriate enough. I did search through the music sub forum’s first three pages for a more fitting place to post, there was none. Yet. I think they fit here either way. I do think the music sub forum needs a thread for mourning music though, (I might make one or would gladly post there if someone else were to do so before I get time to).
The album Frustration Plantation was a brilliant concept album. So many good tracks though I’m especially partial to their song,
The Mayor:
The cello swoons here, sweeping you away.
