The current new party line, since the "muh AI is destroying the planet" isn't effective, seems to be: AI is killing your ability to think for yourself.

Which is rich since all of these people are using social media to copypasta these ideas.

Gonna out myself as a bit of a fag here, but in the past couple weeks there's been a big push in art communities like Twitter/Bsky in clients being outspoken about the absolutely insufferable behavior of the online art community.

People no longer want to keep their frustrations quiet or willing to be bullied or strung along by "internet celebrities" and are openly calling out how hilariously unprofessional, childish, and irresponsible alot of these artists are. They'll kick and scream that their art is a career, that they should be paid a living wage, and that they should be taken seriously, only to use commission work as glorified donations they bury under mountains of excuses because they're lazy, impulsive, and have no self-discipline

Reason I bring this up is because a big talking point that's sprung up over this uproar is alot of people pointing out how this behavior has validated and emboldened the average consumer to use AI generation. Why pay hundreds of dollars to some asshole who has no intention of completing the work when you can learn basic generation through a platform like ComfyUI in a weekend?

The absolute fucking seethe and venom I see thrown at this talking point are fucking absurd. Keep in mind alot of people bringing it up AREN'T Pro-AI, but simply want to underline that, as with everything else, as services get shittier customers will look elsewhere. Same exact thing that has happened to Music, Movies, and Gaming. Services like Netflix or Spotify got so shit its literally easier and cheaper to pay your sleazy uncle 50 bucks for a firestick and boom, done. Its been this way since the 80s with duping tapes and shit.

It saddens me that the anti-AI crowd are so fucking deranged they can't have a civil conversation about it unless you are actively screaming how much you despise AI every either sentence. You can't even try to point out the symptoms and causes that have led to it's popularity, because it sounds like you're validating it's use instead of openly condemning it.

Got literal (and hilarious) death threats from all manner of trannys and freaks because I wouldn't back down on my stance that yes, because alot of art Twitter has been infested with lazy, work allergic retards, its pushing casual consumers towards AI.

I don't understand what is so controversial about such a neutral statement, and then these idiots wonder why people don't want to sympathize with their beliefs.

Wow so they went from being transphobic in disguise to now being ableist? I'm not going to listen to someone who discriminates based on iq like the nazis did.

Because it's the internet. There is no such thing as a 'neutral' statement to these people. To them you are disagreeing. You might not be taking the side of the people saying the opposite to them but because you are not agreeing with them then you are lumped in the same group with the completely opposite side. You agree or you are on the other 'side', that's the extent of discourse online. Same reason why people get confused and don't know what to do when you say you don't want your money sent to palestine or israel, they will just continue to call you a genocide supporter or whatever because they just don't have the ability to conceptualise that you can disagree with both 'sides'.

This sounds like a very plentiful salt mine. If you have any funny screenshots, so share them here. And it really just comes down to money. Simple as that. Professional artists don't care because they know their work is a commodity and crunch time is something these social media artists don't have to deal with.

Which makes me wonder, I wonder how wide spread AI is used in the manga industry. Artists were already tracing/bashing backgrounds and the weekly serialization schedule is brutal and more than a few mangaka have retired due to health issues. I know of one mangaka who staunchly refuses to use AI but is it really worth it when the consumer doesn't care? Especially if it's used for screen tones and backgrounds. But ok, keep slaving away for your corporate publisher overlords.

I've found it kind of hard to deal with and unusually difficult otherwise I'd be making them 24/7. Most of AI is English and English (or Chinese) centric and enough of Japanese ideas don't translate well to begin with before even going near AI with them.

I'm sure there's dudes who make it work but I don't want to know how to translate jap->english->back to jap pray for refinement blessings and it only being another 100 generations before you see something usable.

It's also deeply shameful probablly culturally speaking (for now).

I always love this kind of drama. Maybe we can get a Community Watch thread just for client-vs-artist drama (which is especially prevalent in vtuber spaces).

I would just like half these people who are these AI companies one to stop driving up the prices of electricity, RAM and memory cards so when I build a new computer next year I don't have to pay out the ass. Also stop fucking promising the moon. Literally stop exaggerating what your systems can do. You sound like a bunch of scam artists. Is AI impressive in some fields, yes. Is it going to place all jobs? Fuck no.

This is basically just OpenAI/Sam Altman. Sam Altman is going to scam; he did it long before the AI stuff.

This is what all startups do and it will not stop.

Even though AI slop is what it is, I am very fond of The Shape Store

My compromise position is that vids like these are good proof of concept / rookie drafts come to life, and that with luck they could and should bring about actual artists to continue the concept into real works

I swear man some people are genuinely so fucking stupid and ignorant. "MuH Ai USeS WaTeR!!!" While using social media like x or jewtok which are ALSO hosted on datacenters which use WATER to be cooled. Its funny how they have 0 clue on how datacenters work,.The funniest part is these types of people are usually the biggest consoomers who buy the most useless crap from big tech companies and use their services (which are again hosted on datacenters) while claiming people who use ai are literally sucking up all the heckin water!!!!!

It really is. The sheer, absolute, fucking ironing.

Or maybe you shouldn't build a new computer every year.
In fairness, this one can be both.

What does the average person actually use their computer for, just watching videos and checking emails, some light office tasks. Functionally, computer hardware could have stopped advancing at all 15 years ago and the capability to do all those tasks would be entirely the same- Back then it was a different problem, and manufacturers had to start implementing planned obsolescence and bloat updates (much more noticable in phones, but definitely a thing for regular PC software) to force consumers to buy fresh hardware every couple years.

Now, with this innovation, they don't need to do that any more, they can just rely on the datacenter market for infinite demand.

If we were half way sensible, as a society, we'd just use the bare minimum for what we need to accomplish a given task. But we don't, because that doesn't make line go up.

lol this is what people actually think:

yeah LLMs are trained to want to please you but they can and do and push back if you prompt them. they're only as retarded as their users, honestly.

This is actually pretty cool. I view this as already a real work, as real as it needs to be. If it was more than this, it might be too much, "ok yeah we get it." even the context of it being a random shitty Twitter/Tiktok video of somebody's brief documentation of weird adventures....you can picture it like a day someone spent at a Compton Toys R Us or something. To go further than this might spoil the concept, and it's not like I want to explore the greater Shape Store universe or anything.

It's like Rick and Morty's Interdimensional Cable. The whole point is to imagine (or fail to imagine) the rest of the world that this place slots into, without getting to see it.
