Re: Rafe's name, while she's clearly trying hard (and failing) to rise above her station as white trash, I'm not gonna come for her over the actual spelling of the name. Really the only people who spell it Ralph with Rafe pronunciation are those who have it as a longtime family name. Rafe is a pretty common variant these days (eg the actor Rafe Spall) and pretty much everyone pronounces Ralph as Ralph otherwise.

Tbh I would actually judge her more if she actually spelled it Ralph with the Rafe pronunciation. That would make the tryhard-ness too obvious.

I think it would be really helpful to casual readers and newbies if a list of popular nicknames was added to the OP if people are going to persist with using them. I honestly find it kind of hard to read through even though I'm a reg, and I think most people would find it easier if those nicknames weren't used at all (not trying to ask anyone to stop doing it, just throwing in my two cents). Rape in particular seems unnecessary and confusing, because people who are unfamiliar with Rafe won't get who you're talking about and might think somebody in that group of friends is some kind of rapist.

- a relationship with no sex, just hand-holding and cuddling
- being their partner's carer if they were obese

Most women would not accept a relationship with any one of those issues, let alone all of those issues together. Everything you said makes very much sense but you have to consider what type of girlfriend she's having. All of them are obese themselves and some of them seem a little bit how to say it in a nice way... slow? They're not exactly the definition of normal, they're all in an enabling circle of obese/morbidly obese, probably half of the time depressed insecure people, on top of that here we have a very manipulative person who act's like she's cooler 24/7. A normal intelligent person can see through her bs, to some type of people evidently her act is enough to fall for it and try. I think there are a lot of women who actually would close an eye in a lot of things just to be with someone, I've seen it often in people I know, even nice looking and thin girls and found myself wondering many times wtf they were seeing in their partner..

AL looks like a grandma because the effects of obesity on the face aren't too vastly different from the effects of aging on the face. The fat in her cheeks and her neck give her the apprearance of saggy jowls, which happens with loss of muscle tone and thinning skin in the elderly. She has naturally thin lips, which is another side affect of the aging process, only made to look smaller by her ever-growing cheeks. Her eyes look sunken in because they're slowly being consumed by her facial fat. She also has a lot of darkness to her skin, especially around her eyes, furthering the sunken-in look. Also because she doesn't get semi-annual dental exams and cleanings and she inhales sugary foods I'm sure she has the teeth of a 35-year-old at best.

She looks old because she's rapidly aging her body with food. The granny glasses, tacky costume jewelry, and her collection of cardigans only enhance the grandma look.
