Can we have a Star Trek again that doesn't wipe out established major powers for cheap shock value? Is that too much to ask for?

Yeah, feels like Trek is like The Lone Ranger. It's doubtful we will have future generations that understand how to write military professionalism on screen.I've thought for a while that maybe Star Trek needs to lie fallow for a while and then get a hard reboot with none of the 60 years of lore and baggage to tie it to the past. Just start with the basic concept of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, the Enterprise, and an episodic morality play each week and then moving on to the next adventure.
But I'm honestly not sure that's possible with the current environment of the studios, the writers, and what they both think the audience wants.
Well, we do have the GWOT-vets, but those are mostly retarded millenials... Unless some guys from any NATO-airforce or navy can be arsed to do some Trek, we're screwed.Yeah, feels like Trek is like The Lone Ranger. I don't think you have to go that far back. You could have the optimistic, exploration-focussed tone of TOS set in the aftermath of the Dominion War. Exploring the Gamma Quadrant, figuring out how to deal with separatist and insurgent Dominion factions, figuring out what the Alpha Quadrant is going to look like now that it's no longer united by a common enemy.I've thought for a while that maybe Star Trek needs to lie fallow for a while and then get a hard reboot with none of the 60 years of lore and baggage to tie it to the past. We've had too many Doomcock-esque funeral announcements about Kurtzman Trek over the years for me to celebrate yet, but it looks like it may finally be happening. Halleluiah.Looks like kurtzmann trek is dead and there isn't anything coming after SFA season 2 and SNW season 5.
Good. Let them die.
Rather have no trek than ten more years of gay jew trek.
TOS was really the only version of Trek where people with military experience had any influence on the show, since a lot of the production staff were WWII vets. Even by the time of TNG, veterans were essentially absent from Hollywood in any capacity as the Boomer-age cohort took over (and it showed). I doubt that will ever change.Well, we do have the GWOT-vets, but those are mostly retarded millenials... Unless some guys from any NATO-airforce or navy can be arsed to do some Trek, we're screwed.
Yeah, this is probably the easiest way for future producers to simply ignore most of the Nutrek garbage without alienating the pink-hairs by officially retconning it. I honestly don't trust modern Hollywood to do it though. better for it to lay fallow for a decade or more, I fear.Set it 30 years afterwards so we don't need to have excessive cameos and things have had time to change and evolve.
My least favourite part of DS9 is when it ended. Not how it ended, just when. There easily could’ve been a great season 8 showing how everyone deals with the aftermath of the war, and they could’ve changed the status quo quite a bit to keep things interesting. Maybe Odo goes back to the Great Link for the season and only makes spot appearances, and now with Dominion space open there’s a lot of potential for meeting new races and getting back to exploring the galaxy. The massive power vacuum where the Dominion was could keep the politics and dynamics of the show strong too, like how the collapse of Cardassia left Bajoran space a mess but now it’s a whole quadrant. There was just so much they could’ve done but it never happened, and now all we have is fucking Starfleet Academy and Picard to follow up in this universe.I don't think you have to go that far back. Yes, but the people who wrote TNG and on were people with advanced degrees like Law (Snodgrass) and Physics (Shankar). The least educated person in that group is Ronald Moore, which is pretty good. The people that make Star Trek today made Transformers and Disney Wars.TOS was really the only version of Trek where people with military experience had any influence on the show, since a lot of the production staff were WWII vets. So in the past twenty years, Vulcan, Romulus, the Federation, the Mirror Universe, the Borg, and the Klingon Empire have all been decimated in some way. Did I miss any?Can we have a Star Trek again that doesn't wipe out established major powers for cheap shock value? Is that too much to ask for?
This is one thing I love about Lower Decks. It showed what happened to a few DS9 characters after the War like Kira and Rom.My least favourite part of DS9 is when it ended. Now how it ended, just when. There easily could’ve been a great season on 8 showing how everyone deals with the aftermath of the war, and they could’ve changed the status quo quite a bit to keep things interesting.
Since the Burn was a galaxy-spanning event, yeah... you probably missed a few, lol. Like, how did the Dominion survive that?So in the past twenty years, Vulcan, Romulus, the Federation, the Mirror Universe, the Borg, and the Klingon Empire have all been decimated in some way. Did I miss any?
I'm not saying the TNG production staff weren't good--they were generally intelligent and talented (although Season 1 makes you wonder). Most were science fiction fans who tried to treat the setting and stories seriously, and to create a quality show. It's just that they lacked any insight into military matters, and it showed in how they portrayed many aspects of Starfleet, and how shallow many of their moral takes related to military conflicts were. Whatever the flaws of TOS, that core WWII military experience of many staff comes through in ways TNG falls flat on.Yes, but the people who wrote TNG and on were people with advanced degrees like Law (Snodgrass) and Physics (Shankar). Meant major races with stories about nearly getting wiped out, my bad.Since the Burn was a galaxy-spanning event, yeah... you probably missed a few
It's fair to assume that everyone was blown up. Trek will end up with the barbarians camping out in the ruins of greater civilizations. They will dismantle the last working warp cores for the copper in them.Meant major races with stories about nearly getting wiped out, my bad.
In one of those VH1 I Love the 80s things, one of the talking heads just says "Max [Headroom], came, hit hard, then he disappeared. That's what you're supposed to do."My least favourite part of DS9 is when it ended. Now how it ended, just when. There easily could’ve been a great season on 8

Having him be immediately deposed would have been an excellent way to start Season 8 tbhMy least favourite part of DS9 is when it ended. Now how it ended, just when. Also, I imagine in my hypothetical season 8 that there would be a massive revolt on Ferenginar after Rom becomes Grand Nagus in what is an obvious display of nepotism. That was always my second least favourite part of DS9. Rom has no place being a politician. Throughout the whole show they portray him as the underdog technical genius, so you’d expect he’d wind up somewhere like Nog, but then at the end he’s the Grand Nagus. It was dumb and I hated it, but I correct in my head by just imagining the people of the Ferengi Alliance putting blood to the streets over it.
Rom being Grand Nagus is like that episode where Jadzia has to impress her MIL by reciting the entire history of the Klingon Empire, and then Jadzia starts free associating about a brief period where the Klingons experimented with democracy (because to Klingons that’s basically their national humiliation).Having him be immediately deposed would have been an excellent way to start Season 8 tbh

You know a Klingon Republic is scary in the sense how the Roman Republic was a scary beast for 250 years.Rom being Grand Nagus is like that episode where Jadzia has to impress her MIL by reciting the entire history of the Klingon Empire, and then Jadzia starts free associating about a brief period where the Klingons experimented with democracy (because to Klingons that’s basically their national humiliation).

The problem is everything is in decline. Someone took me out for dinner recently and asked what shows I’m hyped for and I had to answer, “…nothing.” What are you supposed to say, the reboot of Scrubs where they’re all 50? Movies aren’t any better. Are you excited for the next Jared Leto vehicle? At this point Resident Evil constitutes the AAA gaming industry. We sit on our asses for 5 years waiting for the next sequel, like the schmucks in Waiting for Godot.
