I heard this for the first time a while ago and was shocked that I had managed to miss another mondo gothy spooktrack from everyone's favourite gibberish Gaels
I really like their third album, bought it on a trip without knowing jackshit about the band and it also had a small note on the cd cover saying "Rarest", so i ended up buying it without a second thought.

One of my best friends is an old-school goth club-night promoter and DJ who’s recently held a few ‘comeback nights’. I dropped this one on him that he’d totally forgotten about and now it fills the floor every time.
Awesome, I love forgotten gems like that. Some locales have a more active nightlife than others. Some have at least one goth (or similar) night a week, whereas others only have one per month, (if that) held in the back of a Mexican restaurant on a Monday. That these clubs still exist in various incarnations is pretty cool. Many bigger cities still have at least one or two og goth nights, (amongst whatever other events they regularly hold,) & a surprising amount of smaller cities & towns, too. It’s always interesting seeing what types of clubs & live shows are going on when traveling or looking at places or destinations.

Garlands is a great album, I’m partial to Blind Dumb Deaf, off that particular record. I really love the bass lines, which in the earlier part of their career were pretty simple, but they got the job done & more importantly, did it well. The album after Garlands, Treasure, had some amazing songs. The bass line in Beatrix is classic:
Lorelei always filled the dance floor, & still does when it gets played:

Been listening to some dancey tracks lately, things I normally don’t listen to often, like Covenant & Combichrist. The tracks that get overplayed at clubs are fun every now & then, there’s a reason they get played so much I guess. Though this could be considered as verging into other sub-genres, it’s probably still on topic enough:

Combichrist - This Shit Will Fuck You Up

MayFly - Rasputina

The fly - of May
It lives - one day.

When that day is done
The MayFly does not complain.
It flies into the setting sun.
It goes back to the place
From which it came

The fly - of May

Ask how - ask why
One day - MayFly.
That's all - you get.
You give - no thought to it.

Me, my life is long
With reasons few like you.
When I go and when I'm gone
I will understand these things
I never knew.

The fly - of May

One day one day one day one day
It's long enough
If you really think about it.

The fly - of May
It lives - one day.
Melora Creager is one of my favorite cellists. The entire structure of this piece is amazing, from the lyrics to the timing.

Is the cello the gothiest instrument? Discuss.

Optional rivals include the pipe organ, drum machine, and electric guitar with distortion cranked to 11.

Rasputina is such a throwback. Hipster pop-goth stuff from 2000s? Kind of like a shadowy version of Primus in some ways but maybe I just keep thinking of Mr Krinkle whenever I hear them.

Cello is one of the greatest & the most gothic of the stringed instruments. I’ve long held that cello is utterly beautiful, & as far as strings go, it’s likely in the top spot, (though the violin/ fiddles & guitar/ bass guitar are all top tier, too). Cello is safely in the top three of strings, and my first choice, (though I’m better with guitars & bass than cello & violins.)

Pipe organ, synths, drum machines, & regular drums are all included too. I think any instrument can fit any genre. Putting just drums, maybe a flute, or a pipe organ together, with the right beat, you get a dirge. What’s more goth than a dirge? Speaking of the dirge, Rasputina cleverly used a dirge beat in their rhythm of their cover of Wish You Were Here.

Rasputina began in the 90’s, but got bigger a few years after the turn of the 21st century. They really are a throwback, though still going to the best of my knowledge. A mix of goth rock and other genres, Rasputina’s leader, Melora Creager claimed her music as a new form created, cello rock. I group it in my head as 90’s goth-esque art music, I guess. They get play on goth radio, at goth clubs, etc, so seemed thread appropriate enough. I did search through the music sub forum’s first three pages for a more fitting place to post, there was none. Yet. I think they fit here either way. I do think the music sub forum needs a thread for mourning music though, (I might make one or would gladly post there if someone else were to do so before I get time to).

The album Frustration Plantation was a brilliant concept album. So many good tracks though I’m especially partial to their song, The Mayor:

The cello swoons here, sweeping you away.

ETA:
still one of the greatest, RIP
I was lucky enough to catch them live, once. RIP

Would that make Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor the most goth classical music of all time?
Let us test:
Pipes ^
Strings ^
Difficult decision, in this case the organ dominates but being a longtime cello enthusiast, I am going to have to take a little time before I can make a definitive call.

Sir, that is the goth anthem. Well, that and:

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Red Over White

the woods and the town
covered in snow
all transformed to a fairytale
like the fresh page of a book opened up
ready
waiting
for the story to begin
for you're all in a scene
objects in black ink
fringed in white
breathing and living
and anticipating
a colour
all transformed to a fairytale
unreal and inviting
inviting you to step in
and follow the path neverending

you're now leaving
imprints
and somehow expecting
expecting someone

maybe the prince in disguise
suffering a snow queen curse
but you're wrong of course
it's in reverse

out in the snow
muffled
the last silent night
the last sacrifice
red running over white
red running over white
red
running over white
red
running over white
running red
over white
running red
over white

red over white
red over white
red
over white

Noticed a lot of people not knowing what "goth" is lately, thinking it's purple-haired Amelia, not being able to make "goth girls" with AI, etc.

Here's what it is:

Strummed acoustic chords, deep manly voice, words that don't mean anything but they mean it very seriously, and it's beautiful.
