I am cats. Ask me Nothing

How long do you leave your cats alone before you consider asking someone to check on them? I usually go up to 3 days and anything beyond that I have someone swing by to make sure they're okay.
Never left them more than a day. If it is a couple of days I’d bribe one of the neighbours kids. More than a weekend I’d put them in boarding but I’ve not had to do that yet.
It’s dependent on the cat. My old ex farm cat was an outdoor boy and was fine being left a week with a feeder and fresh water and someone checking in a couple of times.

Despite it being in PNAS, and despite the quality of the study, I have serious reservations about its conclusions. The context of the study was based on what we currently know about certain taste receptors and their genetic expression. I argue that what we know isn't comprehensive and thus leaves an opening for configurations and behaviors of receptors in ways that don't fit into our traditional understanding of taste receptor physiology and associated functionality. I think there is a good chance that eventually we will discover that the conclusions from this study are indeed fundamentally flawed.

36ish hours is about the limit of how much I trust my cats to eat one day's worth of raw before it goes bad, then work up an acceptable appetite the next day. They'll get lonely but will cuddle each other.

Way back when I had to leave them for a couple days, and temporarily swapped them to a giant bowl of kibble and an even bigger tub of water for the duration, but the shock of dietary downgrade gave one a urinary infection so I would not recommend doing that, unless they are already on kibble, in which case... 3 days seems fair.

I would agree with the 36 hour limit, at the absolute most. I've never personally tested it beyond 24 hours.

thought this was an interesting thing about cats, didnt know they couldnt taste a certain flavor.
i wonder if doing a taste test between olive oil mayo and normal mayo would be a good quality litmus.
report back with your findings if you ever get a different brand of mayo lol

I almost forgot, I have tried Miracle Whip on them. They are smart enough to sniff it before eating it since cats know to never trust any human, regardless of how much they say they love and cherish you. Both of them wrinkled their noses up and turned to look at me like "What kind of evil human deception is this?! Are you trying to poison us?!?" and walked away in disgust, ignoring my pleas that it was only a joke.

yea that thing i linked was older than i thought too, sorry if it was bad infos.
from what i read it has to do with receptors and possibly that carnivores dont taste sweetness due to not really eating plants. although cats can become lawn mowers fucking up house plants whenever they so choose. ( its their world, we only live in it )
but that also makes me ask, maybe processed sugars or artificial sweeteners are hitting different receptors that can trigger cat's taste of 'sweet'? because there's obviously evidence of cats liking candy lol, although maybe it's other ingredients/senses. i dont know : (

No more than a day. My cats don't free feed. If we left them alone with a bowl of food for a day or more, they'd eat it all in an afternoon, nap for a few hours, and then immediately begin starving once they woke up.

I don't leave him alone

He doesn't leave me alone

My cats did me a solid today. One of my most common sandwiches for lunch is a turkey sandwich. Of course, my cats love to jump up and steal a piece of turkey, if they can, while I am making my sandwich. Today, they went to steal a piece as they normally do, but they suddenly stopped like they had hit a brick wall; they sniffed the turkey, crinkled up their noses, and hissed at it, before jumping down and running off.

I've never seen them do that before so I was immediately suspicious of said turkey. I picked it up and sniffed it, and without a doubt, it had gone bad. I often forget to sniff meat before using it for a sandwich since I have never encountered a piece of meat that when it went bad didn't appear obviously "off". However, this turkey appeared perfectly fine, except for its smell. I immediately expressed to them what incredibly good kitties they were since they had almost certainly saved me from a case of food poisoning. They both gave me a look that said they were rather confused by my sudden profession of profound gratitude.

I promptly gave them a big hug, and a whole can of white albacore tuna split between them for a treat. They seemed quite befuddled by my offering of highly desirable human food stuffs with no apparent strings attached. However, they had no intention of passing up 1/2 a can of tuna, which they happily gobbled down as fast as they could to guarantee a "no backsies" situation.

I have engraved a mental note in my brain that from now on I will, without fail, always sniff all meat before using it for food, and that having food thieving felids as housemates isn't necessarily a bad thing on extremely rare occasion.

I gave my cats a little taste of mayo a few months ago while I was making a sandwich just to see if they would like it, and they went nuts for it. Now, every time I am in the kitchen they come running and meow non-stop for more mayo (they are both big talkers). I know it's about the mayo, because if I give them a bit of mayo, they shut up and wander off. If I give them something else they would eat, like butter, they will eat it, but keep meowing. But, if I subsequently give them a dab of mayo, they shut up and go away.

I have created my own personal hell by giving my cats just a touch of mayo. If I had any idea cats loved mayo this much, I would have thrown it out and never used it again for risk that this might happen.

Now I am reduced to two choices, give in to the feline terrorists, or listen to the cacophony of dissonant meows at full volume every time I am in the kitchen. To me, it is lose/lose because, much like the President of the US, I do not negotiate with terrorists.
You may have all the knowledge in ze vorld but yet still not connect the dots that mayonnaise contains all the components required to make it kitty crack until it's too late.
