Brianna Wu for Congress
I live in DC and had never heard of Briannu Wu until she got attacked by the GamerGate mob for being a woman who published a video game. I did not follow that controversy very closely, but I did speak out on social media often enough to be attacked myself, although in a comparatively minor way, enough for me to have the most profound respect for the courage of its chief targets.
Our society does not take violence against women seriously. That is not the chief reason that I am supporting Brianna Wu, but it is reason enough. We will never stop violence against women until those who hold political power take it seriously. If we do not elect people like Brianna Wu, we will never put an end to this sort of violence.
Brianna Wu understands and loves technology in a warts-and-all sort of way. It is a serious problem that members of congress have such a limited understanding of technology. It permits technology lobbyists to run circles around them. It is not just a question of campaign donations, although that certainly is a crucial factor, it is also a question of being dazzled by things they do not understand. If you have not closely examined the connections between code and policy you miss how code is law. As someone who participated in the work of the Federal XML Committee, I saw first hand how the mere tweak of an IT standard can have a significant impact on how citizens interact with their government. We need members of congress who love technology without the techno-hubris that plagues so much of the industry.
The main reason I whole-heartedly and energetically endorse Wu is that she supports HR 676 Medicare for All. It would be much cheaper for Americans to pay a modest increase in their FICA taxes rather than the bloated insurance premiums we currently pay. Under HR 676 Medicare for All EVERYTHING would be covered. No more copays, no more worrying about whether there is a specialist in your network, just health care, for everyone, no exceptions.
The current incumbent for Massachusetts 8th Congressional District Stephen Lynch, who is anti-abortion and has a horrible voting record in other respects. This is Massachusetts, we can do better, much much better. We can elect Brianna Wu.
If you live in her district, I encourage you to get involved in her campaign. If you don’t, throw her some funds if you are in a position to do so. Follow her on Twitter. Her campaign promises to be one of the highlights on 2018.
