Yeah, as someone that was born into a catholic family, raised catholic, everyone on both sides of my family is catholic as far back as I know of. It's been pretty cringe seeing what the online right trad-caths have tried doing, and the orthobros for that matter.

I feel like most of the cringe shit I see posted in relation to either are from those types. That are caught up in the online right's grift.

Don't get me wrong. I want to see more people become catholic, or any kind of christian outside of (dispensationalist denominations people joining those might as well be the same as becoming a jew, or a mormon as far as I'm concerned, it's not christianity). But people joining, and just trying to fit what they think the church stands for into their own fucked up world view is as bad or worse than just not joining. I have a hard time believing anyone that says some of the stuff about race I see on this site are actually christian. And I don't mean saying something "racist", I mean the actual hatred of other races (to me their is a pretty clear difference), and thinking that's perfectly fine.

Its like these people think just because it's cool on X to do the whole performative cruelty thing, that's what being a christian, or a catholic is about. They somehow don't realize they fell for propoganda, and especially in the case of the middle eastern Israeli propoganda.
Really that's kind of giving the benifit of the doubt that people like that guy are even catholic in the first place, and not a bot or some kind of bad actor.
I guess that's a bit of a drawn out way of saying, I think fake catholics that join for political reasons are cringe, and I really don't like them.
Which brings me to the other topic that was brought up. Even if a portion of people I see doing that sort of performative cruelty are bots, or paid shills. That does end up having an effect on actual people. They wouldn't bother doing it if it didn't. We are social animals, seeing what the heard says does have an effect on our own opinion, even if we don't realize it. And it effects some more than others. So there is likely a healthy mixture of people that follow people that are paid propogandists that fell for it, and bad actors.

I never read Hillbilly Elegy. But I know a lot of the old union socialist and local historian types hated him because he became the Hillbilly Whisperer (whether or not he sought it) to the American establishment and it was blamed for covering for the structural mess the country had made in Appalachia.

It’s funny, I remember one of the Orthodox Kiwis on this site posting a meme article that said something like “Man excommunicated from Orthodox Church for not being enough of an asshole online”. Obviously satire, but it’s pretty true for the online Catholic and Orthodox sphere. A lot of these people just aestheticlarp and don’t understand the actual tenets of the faith which is pretty obvious by the way they act.

He is quite possibly one of the least Appalachian figures in American politics. Ohio claiming Appalachian heritage is already a stretch and when you look into Vance’s history he’s a straight up industry plant. Basically he’s less charismatic than a skinwalker and the best sympathy story they could eek out is to advertise that his mom was a junkie

I've read the book, and Vance literally does handwave complaint of structural issues, which he explicitly compares to complaints of African American communities. I'm not a fan of the academic progressive cliques that hyperfocus on structural issues and ignore personal agency, but Vance took bootstraps-individualism to such a reductive extreme it was laughable.

This is old enough of a work I'm not sure if it's reflective of his true beliefs or if that's just part of his earliest persona.

I’ve said this on the KKK thread but I’ll also say it here for the Biblically correct “Le based trad Cath” take on Immigration.

The Churches first and foremost temporal function now is to serve the poor as Jesus Christ commanded us to do in Matthew 25. We are called to serve the needy no matter where they might be and that just so happens to be with mainly immigrants. The Church is not pro “open borders” because of this because the Church teaches that they should operate within the confines of what the State currently allows (CCC 2241) for the common Good. Most of these Catholic (or really any immigrant Christian charity) NGO’s were developed for precisely that reason. Not only that, but it would be considered a mortal sin within the Catholic Church to encourage someone to immigrate illegally and ignore the laws of the land. We are to treat the Immigrant as though they were the face of Jesus Christ, and if deported, offer them the same respect and dignity that they deserve. The responsibility in that case falls on the state to actually enforce their immigration Laws, not the Catholic Church. They aren’t/shouldn’t be dragging them in and dumping them in the middle of Minneapolis, their primary function is to Serve and provide education and assistance to the ones that are here.

That being said, there is no doubt very Bad actors within these NGO’s that do help to facilitate illegal immigration that serves to harm the common good. That doesn’t mean that these NGO’s should be shuttered permanently, I don’t want the Church to forget the hungry or needy because they are spics or jeets, but they need to actually be reminded of that passage in the Catechism. Although I am very racist, I believe that we should treat them with the same dignity and respect as though they are one of God’s children.

However, I believe that there is a case to be made that they do Harm the common good and desperately need to be reformed in some manner, but my blame is no where near on the Church or the Pope itself. And people who feel scandalized by the faith for serving the poor should take a look at the Martyrdom of St Lawrence as a reminder of who the Church actually serves.

The reason why you see so many of these “Le based anti-immigration Trad Cath/Orthobro” types is because they are putting their Temporal ends above the Commandment’s that Christ Gave us. It was nothing new in the Bible, and these people will appear throughout time wherever the Church, or Christianity itself, appears.

Now let me just say although I’m not a fan of Islamic societies overall but this video both impresses me and makes me kind of sad to see what type of people are being screwed over right now. Sure, maybe it’s just a couple cities like this that are nice, maybe it’s cherry picked, and of course it’s not perfect there, but this is a really eye opening video.

The last time I saw streets this clean looking and infrastructure this nice was Japan. American media’s portrayal of Iran leads everyone to believe that Iranians are all retarded low IQ goat fornicators that live in a desert ghetto with dirt roads.

Sure this may not show the full story about life in Iran but the fact that this city looks nicer than literally every modern American city leads me to believe there is truth to this video and that we have been blatantly lied to for years about what type of people and culture Iran is.

After watching this, seeing people cheering for the death of these people and their society and calling Trump some sort of hero for “destroying our enemies” makes me sick to my stomach.

I've watched a few of these already. Some from English speaking travellers, some from Chinese ones and some in Arabic. I felt lied to by our media because I was under the impression that Iran was no better than North Korea in terms of social freedom.
It's not a perfect society by all means, religious minorities and women still face numerous roadblocks despite many being highly educated, but it's not the horrendous shariah theocracy our media displays.
