White phosphorus is a gooey liquid that spontaneously burns when exposed to oxygen in the air. The fire isn't that intense compared to other incendiaries such as thermite or even napalm. It does produce a lot of white smoke though. The smoke doesn't have any immediate health affects, but can cause bone decay with chronic exposure.
