I knew it! I had a hunch that trying to win prizes with these machines doesn't make much sense since they're the minor-friendly equivalent of slot machines. Guess SpongeBob really lied to all of us when he told we just had to "be the crane" when playing them and we would win.

The difference between these games and slots or other casino games; is, at least in Nevada that I know of, you have the Nevada Gaming Commission which requires games to payout a certain percentage. Meanwhile, these machines don't have any such legislation or requirement, so the owner/operator can set the difficulty high/payout rate low. Key machines won't align properly if it hasn't been paid enough, claw machines will not close all the way and other small things that look like player error, but is baked into the control software. If you find yourself asking what's more honest, a casino slot machine or one of these prize machines, the answer is the casino slot machine. That being said I can't vouch for online stuff, they operate on a whole different level since they're not even USA based.
