Star Trek - Space: The Final Frontier

She wasn't even that fat. Look up some slob like Lena Dunham and then get back to me. I'm not saying she was a good character or even a good actress, but I find it odd that Mary Wiseman got so much shit for her appearance.
They really put this slightly downsy-looking ginger fresh off the short bus on the command staff and spent four seasons astroturfing her as the next Barclay.

Meanwhile the only thing the internet remembers about her is a) she got fat and b) she was the retard in charge of the spore drive. Neelix was the guy who fucked a child alien and made a terrible soup. What's Wil Wheaton's legacy? He's the genius teenager everyone wanted to vent out in space

Fuckin' A. There were so many reasons to hate Tilly and her being a little chunky should have been last on the list.

I started watching Stargate SG1. Great so far; got to see some boobies and bush, good acting, the MacGyver reference in the first episode gave me a chuckle. Then I get to "Emancipation" aka Planet Mongolia. How did this get on air in 1997? This is Code of Honor levels of hilariously offensive which made me look up the imdb of one of the writers...

Oh yeah. It is one of the ones people are told to skip.

Also chuck had way too much fun with the lower decks tribute to Voyager.

They did the inclusivity draft. First pick: black woman captain. Second pick: aspie who eats.

It was just a bad mix, and the actress was like I'm done pretending to be in shape for this role. And then then she hits you with "I'm queer now" What? She eats pussy too, not just deep dish pizza.

I literally have more respect for Sonequa Martin-Green now. I’ve seen her in other things. She’s actually really good when she’s not trapped in Kurtzman committee writing. Mary Wiseman disappeared into an Applebee's somewhere.

She grew on me, and I can agree with this. If you give her good material she's actually good. Her "Let's Fly" isn't "Engage" worthy but it's pretty good.

I just don't understand why they just didn't start with her being Captain. It would have been a stronger open, or just keep Michelle Yoeh (which was a crime how she was used.)

This is already well talked-about road.

It was a better time, and I'm tired of pretending otherwise. You can't be racist and then be like "oh no, those older shows are full of racist shit, how did these chuds get away with it!"... I'm really fucking tired of shitlib talking points infesting everything. Just be racist and don't give a fuck about them, it's literally that easy.

She never got shit for being obese though, even in STD it was never acknowledged, which made a sequence in the second season very funny where she won the marathon onboard the Discovery. Yes, she beat every /fit/ officer.
The production never talked about her weight because they support every [current year] cause. The actress later got pregnant during the 4th season and as soon as it got known, she came out as bisexual (she is married to a man by the way). My schizo theory is that she isn't bisexual but she wanted to keep her job so she checked the bisexual box to remain high in the progressive stack.

Are you drunk? I saw memes about her being fat on /pol/. If you mean the show never brought it up, then no shit, the producers aren't going to mock an actress for being fat. Either way, I'm not defending STD. I never watched it because it looked like, and was, shit. All I'm saying is her appearance was talked about more than how retarded her character was.

4chan is not real life though. I made fun of her in the trek threads on /tv/ at the time too but her weight wasn't a topic outside of 4chan. No reviewer brought it up.

I meant that they should have told her to exercise. Back in the BSG days up to SGU, the actors who had military roles were told to be fit, they had to do crossfit training. Of course this was before the "body positivity" movement and the cult of morbid obesity became a thing.

Fun fact: The kid who tried to sell Carter into slavery would later go on to play a Power Ranger.

I'm only saying this because it's the one good thing I can think of from that episode.
I just don't understand why they just didn't start with her being Captain.
I'd say the arc leading to her becoming Captain was the problem. The third season should have been about her readjusting to her job as First Officer before proving herself worthy of taking command of Discovery as Captain. Instead, a chunk of the season was wasted on Tilly being First Officer for some reason and losing the most important ship in Starfleet withjn hours of being placed in charge.
The actress later got pregnant during the 4th season
At least they didn't beam a baby inside her womb this time.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love me some good racism and thought the episode was hilarious. I was surprised to see an episode like that airing in 1997 and thought it was even funnier when I found out one of the writers also wrote the Planet Africa episode of TNG.

QUARK! Unlicensed use of Goa'uld technology and impersonating a less advanced race are both very serious offenses.

Ha! But you don't have jurisdiction in the SG1 universe! Just think of the all the latinum I could make selling one of these Stargates! I could buy my own moon like my cousin Gaila!

Hrmph Tell that to the magistrate, you're coming with me.

How many Captains did they actually have? It's like a batting order. You got Georgiou then Lorca then Saru then Pike then Burnham...lastly some guy named Rayner (who's like a remake of Jellico).

They made it more complicated than it had to be. It reminds me of Stargate Atlantis where they kept swapping commanders.

They had a double dose of Georgiou, the original and the Mirror Universe version who they treated like the original one despite knowing the crazy shit she did.

That was the dumbest way to explain away Kiras actress getting knocked up lol
I love/hate TV surrogacy plot lines.

Phoebe is now carrying her brother’s triplets or whatever.

I love it though because the alternative is way worse, like the baby is added to the cast.

Worst one is when the baby is now 30 years old because of alien time dilation. Like, what are we doing here? :lossmanjack:

This is the funniest and most baffling thing about Discovery bar none.

For a supposedly "woke" show to have a character explicitly designed to be Space Hitler become a good guy main character is an insane choice. Could have been an interesting contrasting character, but I think they just underthought it.

Based on what I've read, she never really apologizes or disavows her actions in the mirror universe either. Even if she had done a full on redemption arc, there's really no narratively satisfying redemption for a character like that besides death. Mass genocide and enslavement of aliens, gleeful murder, it's all chill. They introduce her by having her kill and eat the mirror version of a main character, which I would assume you would never do unless you wanted to make the audience hate a character. I guess it's just their culture on that side of the mirror.

Meanwhile murder actually IS part of Worf's culture and people still got on his case for killing one (1) motherfucker who REALLY deserved it. Sisko and even Kira get all up in arms because Dax took an oath of revenge to kill a child murderer. Shoulda been born in the 23rd century! Morals were a lot more lax then, apparently.

I personally thought there was an interesing concept behind Burnham and Mirror Georgiou's relationship (both wanting the other to act like their late counterpart from their own universe), but it was really weird how the later seasons of Discovery had her act like a teenager who stole her dad's credit card to buy tequila. Like, she still spearheaded the deaths of God knows how many people when she was in charge of the Terran Empire. It's an odd choice to try downplaying genocide and cannibalism as soon as she joined the crew because you want to include a quirky anti-hero.

Eh. I like it for being creative.

Gave us a hilarious meta joke moment too.
