I don't have sympathy for this woman at all (since many in this thread seem to think you have to pick one side or the other). But it's so clear from this footage that Nick did not remotely fear for his safety and he went outside because he realized he could easily physically overpower her. Guaranteed he only decided to open the door once he saw she was an older woman. He also went further out of his house than I initially thought to steal her phone, not the behavior of someone who is afraid for their safety.

Why did he steal her phone anyway? Spite? Trying to hide evidence? Did he forget he had a Ring camera?

Wrong on several counts. Nick had to make an apology because the force he used was excessive for the matter at hand. People are actually allowed to knock on your door and you are not privileged to instantly mace them. There is a wide gulf between what went down here and someone shooting a crackhead trying to break into their house at 2am and yes both (Muh both sides) of these people deserve bad things. Sometimes Dim fool is right and the truth is actually nuanced, if the fact pattern was different, if he told her to get the fuck off his property or just stayed in and called the cops then I'd be fine with her being hurt after that but to go instantly to this is beyond the pale and not a society I nor most normal people want to live in regardless of the politics surrounding it.
