yeah that might be the case actually. though if thats the i would wonder why imu did not either try and kill mihawk or recruit him since having the best swordsman in the world on your team seems like a good idea. unless there is something about mihawks fighting style that makes him hard for imu or the gorosei to defeat.
Might be optimistic but I have the feeling that Oda was waiting to pull something with Mihawk later in the story aka around nowish since we're kind of in the end of the narrative where stuff is unraveling.

Everything about Mihawk has been him coasting by on his reputation because he sees no reason to go all out. It’s been established since East Blue that the only time we’re going to see something truly amazing from Mihawk is when Zoro finally faces him to become the greatest swordsman in the world.

i wonder what that's going to look like. a guy who can split through an iceberg with ease has gotta be capable of some crazy shit if he has the right motivation. Hey, why are we using spoilers?

That is very true since I don't think he's done anything of note since that feat in Marineford

He did recruit him. Mihawk was a Warlord.

about the connection between joyboy and imu. what if they were both members of davy jones crew who sailed around with jones while he worked towards making himself king of the world by visiting every island and having their leaders swear loyalty to him.

but then when jones got to the final island maybe laugh tale something happened that put his status as king of the world into question and caused a lasting rift between imu and joyboy and maybe the other crew members. from there imu decided he wanted to be king of the world but instead of doing it like davy jones he was going to do it his own way.

meanwhile joyboy decided to become a pirate and sail around the same way davy jones did which is what eventually lead to the great war which imu ended up winning. almost like it was one big davy back fight between the two the entire time.

I think Joyboy and Davy were rivals, Emmet said "I am sorry I could not make you king" to Joyboy.

Given that Imu coped about Davy not being King

Emmet apologized for failing to make Joyboy king

Davy and Joyboy were likely rivals for the crown.
but you could argue that imu does not see davy as king because imu views everybody as below him so obviously he would never admit somebody else was king because that would imply somebody existed that was above imu.

as for emmet do we know if he was talking about making joyboy king of the world or just king of the ancient kingdom? because if it was just making joyboy king of the ancient kingdom then maybe thats where imu got his spot as one of the first 20 from. he takes the crown so joyboy cant get it then gets all the other royal families to agree with him that joyboy needs to be taken out then the war happens.

emmet could be apologizing because his failure to help joyboy become king of that one kingdom resulted in imu getting more control and joyboy being killed.

I think part of why Imu is hiding everything is because he is technically an illegitimate king, Davy got the prize and Imu pulled it out from under him right after but that doesn't change that Davy is the rightful King which is why Imu was pissed at Rocks for brining him up.

I would say the answer to that is yes. The Ancient Kingdom Ruled the world so the ruler of it is the ruler of the world.

Im going with it being a Whitebeard situation, Joyboy and Imu were both captains under Davy. Both Joyboy and Imu looked up to him alot but Imu eventually came to envy and hate Davy. Leading to Imu betraying him, and a war with Joyboy.
Can't be, Vegapunk said Joyboy is the first "Pirate" and I still think that Davy was "World Government" aligned in the original war.

All that leads me to believe that Imu might have been a member of Nika's crew that betrayed them after the fight that destroyed the Ancient Kingdom. Davy was the real king, he was overthrown by Nika, Nika didn't agree with Imu's plans and we end up with the current situation.

Perhaps there were two people who underwent the surgery.
I am wondering if Imu getting the surgery is a red herring, part of his Domi thing is "Give me some of your life for more power" so he might be extending his life through that. It would be a really good shell game of setting up that payoff on an obvious target to use on someone else later.
