Funny thing about the hardened aircraft shelters at Ali Al Salem Air Base. They were built in the 1980s for the Kuwaiti military, and were subsequently captured by Saddam's army in 1990 and used to park MiGs. Turns out these bunkers did jack and shit to protect these aircraft when Uncle Sam introduced them to bunker busters during Desert Storm.



That photo was taken roughly 15 years later, and by then these shelters still hadn't been repaired. For the longest time I chalked this up to typical Arab laziness cultural frugality, but as it turns out there was a little more going on.

To quote US Senator John Boozman from a talk last year:
