Their original timetable was overly optimistic but the admin is locked in now regardless because there's no diplomatic coming back from this war when the US and Israel have already made it no secret they desire the regime's overthrow and are doing everything they can short of invasion to trigger regime change domestically while for the IRGC this is an existential war for survival meaning they literally cannot accept any outcome short of victory on their terms.

Its either win or lose now, there is no alternative to regime change because the policies pursued by both parties both near and long-term have made those alternatives impossible.

You can't do regime change with only air superiority and bombing shit. you need boots on the ground to even have a chance and Israel doesn't have the manpower to do it alone, There isn't the political will in The US to do it because it will assuredly result in massive losses of military personnel and endless problems at home and there's no real hope of a domestic uprising because the Iranian people would've already done it by now and from all indications they're rallying around the ayatollah out of Persian pride and the fact that we keep threatening to commit mass murder by hitting their electrical and water plants.

If there's an actual plan on how we're going to topple a regime the size of western Europe with 80 million people and some of the worst terrain for a ground invasion in the world i'd love to hear it but as it stands this doesn't sound like a recipe for a total victory for either side, this sounds like a quagmire that's going to do nothing but destroy the world economy.

The thing about Iran is that the USA wouldn't actually need to occupy all that much of it in order to topple the regime. The coastal cities would probably be enough.

Iran is a desert nation with an acute ongoing water shortage that cannot produce the food it needs domestically for all of those 80 million people.

By taking the major port cities in limited ground engagements The USA effectively controls Iran's food supply. (This is where a normal non-suicidal nation would surrender)

The USA from there can do a few things:

Slowly strangle all economic life out of the country over the ensuing months/years until what's left of the IRGC state collapses in on itself.

Begin using those port cities as staging grounds for local freedom fighters who can be fed and armed and given American Air/Armor/Fire support when the time comes for them to attack - A locally grown army already familiar with land, language and custom that limits American lives being put at risk which makes this option more palatable back home.

Ultimately regime change will take boots on the ground, but not as many as some would think.
