Happy Star Wars Day to all who celebrate! If you're a fan of the original trilogy, the prequels, or even some of the spinoff shows like Andor or The Clone Wars, you've got plenty to celebrate. But one group that apparently isn't celebrating this May 4? Sequel trilogy enjoyers, because according to a new report, they don't really exist.

A new report from Nielsen and published by Variety reveals that nobody is watching the most recent trio of core Star Wars films — at least not on Disney Plus. The report reveals two interesting data points: the most-watched Star Wars properties on May 4, 2025 and the most-streamed Star Wars title for each generation of fans. In both cases, the Disney-era movies are nowhere to be seen.

The most-watched property last year was Andor (likely because it was just wrapping up its final episodes at the time), followed by a mix of original and prequel trilogy films, with some other shows and even Rogue One mixed in.

Meanwhile, along generational lines we see some surprising trends: Gen Alpha and the Baby Boomers share a love of The Mandalorian, while Gen Z loves animated The Clones Wars, and Millennials and Gen X both indulge in the grounded, political thrills of Andor. Again, no love for The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, or The Rise of Skywalker.

This isn't exactly a surprise. While the Disney-era films performed well in theaters, The Last Jedi divided fans, while everyone hated The Rise of Skywalker. The latter left such a bad taste in the fandom's collective mouth that it may have retroactively ruined even the solidly enjoyable The Force Awakens.

This might not seem like the biggest problem facing Star Wars. After all, the sequels still crushed at the box office and clearly there's plenty of appetite for the franchise overall. However, the data does seem to confirm a sneaking suspicion we've held for a while now: the sequel trilogy failed to set up the franchise for future success. While the movies leaned heavily on nostalgia and brought back all of the original cast, they also introduced a new generation of heroes who could presumably carry the story forward. But in the seven years since The Rise of Skywalker, that's failed to happen. Rey's spinoff movie is in development hell, Kylo Ren's solo adventure was killed by Disney executives, and both John Boyega and Oscar Isaac seemingly want nothing to do with Star Wars.

The sequel trilogy was supposed to push Star Wars forward. Instead, it turned out to be a dead end. Thankfully, Disney still has Baby Yoda, which is hopefully going to convince the Boomers and their Gen A grandkids to return to theaters when The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters later this month. But after that? The future of Star Wars has never seemed more precarious.

Not a surprise, they are all right up there with Solo in terms of the worst Star Wars has to offer. Bad writing, bad acting, bad world building. It offers nothing interesting, treated old fans like hot garbage, and failed to excite new ones.

You know it used to be with even the worst movies you could hate watch them and catch stupid shit in the background they didn’t catch in post production, now with everything so…digital and bland you can’t even do that shit because the copy pasted star destroyers are literally just copy pasted star destroyers. So it all just leaves you a little less alive and a little more disappointed in the world.

Also I guess the Mandalorian movie comes this month? Supposedly because no one I know talks about it.

While the movies leaned heavily on nostalgia and brought back all of the original cast
And shit on them worse than The Quartering shit on a Wal-mart floor

they also introduced a new generation of heroes who could presumably carry the story forward
And also shit on 2 of the 3, Rey was the only original main character that did not perpetually get treated like a joke.

But in the seven years since The Rise of Skywalker, that's failed to happen
Because the Sequel Trilogy fucking SUCKED.

Rey's spinoff movie is in development hell,
Because they know that it will lose money.

Kylo Ren's solo adventure was killed by Disney executives,
because you can't have a movie starring a Straight White Man in star wars anymore.

and both John Boyega and Oscar Isaac seemingly want nothing to do with Star Wars.
Why would you want to have anything to do with a Franchise that treated you like a joke?

Disney still has Baby Yoda
Your savior is a dead end character whose loses all popularity the moment he utters a real word and can never develop as a character.

The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters later this month
This movie is going to fail worse than the sloppiest MCU Slop because at least the MCU had enough good will built up after a generation where the worst thing you could say is "Thor the Dark World is boring and forgettable" and quite frankly I would watch Thor The Dark World over anything that Disney Star Wars put out, including Andor.

The Force Awakens
An okay star wars, but a real miss with what they did to the lore.
The Last Jedi
Did you like the last film? This one undermines it from the outset and isn't even a good star wars film.
The Rise of Skywalker
Scenes, plot threads, and character development are rushed as hell. The Last Jedi had a handful of cool shots while this one has none.

Even people who liked the first one find it hard to enjoy the second and third.

I'm surprised The Phantom Menace is so far up on the list.
Probably people watching in chronological order I guess.
Though there are a few good moments, episodes I and II are brutal to get through.
Personally I'd start at Episode III, that shit is one of the GOATs.

I think the sequels would have done fine with general audiences if JJ directed and wrote all 3.
Would have been mediocre like everything JJ has ever made but mediocre is enough.
Do you remember how crazy everyone went for TFA? A lot of people claim they hated the sequels from the start but those of us who have a working memory know that just isn't true.
If JJ made all 3 and just kept that 6/10 energy, Star Wars would still be making money and we would get all those 15 movies that were announced but never came to fruition.
Remember those 15 movies that were announced? No? That's OK, nobody does.

The sequel trilogy is total ass and it aged worse than milk. It has no redeeming features, destroyed decades of extended universe for nothing and it was obvious that no one had any fucking idea what to do other than rehashing the original. And even that they couldn't do, because Rian Johnson saw J. J. Abrahms stupid fucking mystery box and proceeded to set it on fire while pissing on people's faces to "own the chuds".

I have heard that Andor was good, but from everying I have seen it also seems like it was a absurdly expensive project that had no way to pay for itself. It also wasn't really sequel star wars since it was set around the time of the original trilogy so there is that.

and clearly there's plenty of appetite for the franchise overall.

Haha holy fucking cope. Literally what gave you this idea journo? I bet the prospect of getting rewarded for brownosing the mouse did.
