Fat Acceptance Movement / Fat Girlcows

You know, they aren't wrong that some people are just naturally heavier. My mom was in the military in her late twenties (this was almost 30 years ago) and she would often get sent to their extreme fat camp for being about 5-10 lbs over the weight they wanted her to be at. Looking at her, she was thinner and seemingly more fit than a lot of the other women lined up with her (she was a bombshell tbh). She was just naturally heavier, despite being in the best shape of her life and better shape than 90% of the population.

The problem is, they've taken this mindset to such extremes I can't even wrap my head around it. What IS the actual origin of this "I'm 400lbs and healthy!" nonsense. The FA movement didn't used to be like this. What quack posted a bogus study like the vaccine guy that got these people on this road? I really am curious where this actually originated. It kind of boggles my mind that it would evolve purely organically. Even the hardcore left ideologies originate from one source or another if you know the history.

There are quite a few watershed moments in the development of FA/HAES:
Late 60s/Early 70s: Feeder man starts National Association of Fat Admirers, then there is a more radical strain of fat activism growing off of that.

Mid 90s: Marilyn Wann publishes FATSO, and starts getting publicity for being an unrepentant whale.

00s: Linda Bacon starts HAES

10s: Rise of SJWism leads to spread of HAES/FA through Tumblr/Buzzfeed/Everday Feminism/Whitney Thore/Tess/Ragen etc.

If there is one particularly bad strain of research that has been adopted by HAES/FA it's probably the studies that say overweight BMI correlates with better outcomes than healthy weight but don't exclude smokers/terminally ill from the healthy weight population. They also love the studies that say the average woman is a size 16, 18, etc, that interpret data via the mean (so the very large people on the far end shift the mean to be greater than the median).

I'm going to point the finger at Linda Bacon, then. Marilyn Wann and the feeder fella seemed to be mostly focused on visual appeal and "I do what I want and am great" over the bogus health claims. I read a short article Bacon wrote a few years ago to get an idea of what she was going on about, and just the way she explains the "studies" she uses is a gigantic read flag they're horribly biased, and thus likely poorly done. Her desire to want everyone to eat healthier, exercise, and be happier overall is a noble goal, but the longer she rattles on the more worrisome her position becomes.

In case you still haven't gotten your solar eclipse goggles you could just have Glitter stand in front of you, look at this complete counter blackout on her latest "haul".

She literally is as wide as a kitchen counter. I fucking love how she's talking about how she's a size 24 in the "curvy" style but a 26 in the "regular" cut. Size is just a number, unless it's vanity sizing aimed at the super obese.

At 8:30 she says skinny jeans with tight ankles create a "fat bubble".

How can an ankle be fat enough to do that

I mean I've seen evidence and I know how super obesity happens but HOW CAN AN ANKLE BE FAT ENOUGH TO DO THAT

Well you see when morbid obesity runs out of control combined with a person's complete lack of self awareness really gross and stupid things tend to happen. They become so disgusting that certain aspects of basic Newtonian physics won't even touch them.

I'm just glad she finally admitted she "cheats" for her shoots with crash-dieting, full-time gym-dwelling, photoshopping, and dehydration. Tacitly condemning other women for not looking like her modeling photos (which, yes, c'mon, she was) while herself not technically looking like that just gums up the debate and, truth be told, takes away respectability from her side due to hypocrisy.

People tend to think in black-and-white terms, especially those with an emotional stake in the opinion. Holding up a literally unattainable standard to women who are actually struggling and then smugly demanding an explanation for not "measuring up" might just nudge some women into giving up.

By no means do I support HAES or Fat Acceptance, but attention-whoring hypocrites need to just stay out of it.
