From what I understand, this gathering began as a protest against the removal of the statue of Robert E. Lee, as dictated by the city council upon the park's renaming to "Emancipation Park". The mayor pronounced the protestors as a whole racists and bigots and haters because OMG Confederate historical figure we must expunge.
