We have been asked by our fellow internet bullies at lolcow.farm to preserve a cow whose thread is in danger of being lost due to the fickle whims of lolcow.farm's administration. On some farms, they put animals down if they get too pathetic. Here at the Kiwi Farms, we're not as particular about where we get our m.ilk, or, to be more specific to the cow in question, our 25 gallons of blood.

Ladies, meet Kelly Ronahan.

Kelly is a ballet dancer from Canada whose entire life revolves around a mystery ailment that causes her to lose iron and hemoglobin in her blood. To treat her condition, she requires regular blood transfusions.

http://globalnews.ca/news/2587368/kelowna-womans-undiagnosed-blood-disorder-baffles-doctors/

Like most munchies, it's fairly obvious that Kelly loves the attention that she gets from being ill, but unlike most munchies, who rely on nonspecific symptoms to prolong their medical fifteen minutes, Kelly really does need the transfusions. She says it's because her disease is so rare no one knows what's wrong with her. The ladies at lolcow.farm think it's because she extracts her own blood, and that this bloodletting is responsible for her anemia. Kelly has a history of anorexia and self-harm, so it's certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

@cuddle striker Any idea on how common it is for munchies to self-inflict symptoms? The "by proxy" part requires a victim, so it seems that is, at most, the more common form of the illness.

If she was exsanguinating though there have to be wounds and/or needle marks. Do we have any evidence?

Not that I'm doubtful someone would do this but I'm just want to see how the conclusion was drawn so I can go "lol wtf?".

ETA: Boy I bet hospital staff doesn't find this obnoxious.

ETA2: I went through the lolcow archive to answer my questions. I'll post the relevant posts here for others who don't want to wade through the whiteknighting (lol are we next?) and OT "twintalk" shit.

*As a note my field is animal sciences, not human med, there are some commonalities, but also some differences that others are free to elucidate on that know more than me.

So autoexsanguinating is so common it's in medical textbooks. In fact, it's the most common munchie tactic.

Okay, there are other posts saying Kellerania has seen a hematologist and was diagnosed (by him? A different doctor? Apparently the claim is dubious as this is coming from Kellerina alone) with uterine fibroids which DO apparently cause heavy peroids. However as this post pointed out Kellerina only goes to the ER for transfusions, NOT the hematologist. Which is bizarre, as Canada has universal healthcare there should be no reason for this.

Screenshot_20170815-120526.jpg

In the previous thread a user apparently calculated how much blood Kellerina would need to lose to need 2-3 bags A MONTH. It was apparently a shot glass worth. Which may not seem like much, but this is DAILY.

Also, yes, all the ballet posing is very strange for someone potentially bleeding a shot glass from their vag A DAY.

Screenshot_20170815-120642.jpg

Apparently she has a port that is left in because of her frequent need for transfusions?(!) THIS SEEMS LIKE THE WORST IDEA EVER WITH A MUNCHIE, but either her doctors don't suspect she's a munchie, she lies to staff about getting it removed, or there's something I'm missing.

I'm assuming hepsal is heparin, an anticoagulant used to "flush" ports when inserting lines (so you don't get a clot blocking the line).

Screenshot_20170815-120800.jpg

A possible explanation about leaving the port in but...yeah. It's a very good explanation about how she can autoexsanguinate.

Screenshot_20170815-124011.jpg

It seems like the hospital staff is finally getting suspucious. Maybe take out the port and see if she improves.

Screenshot_20170815-124239.jpg

Lol I'd love to see what she choose between a hysterectomy and stopping bleeding herself.

Screenshot_20170815-124325.jpg

A lack of an ultrasound makes the fibroid dx dubious.

Screenshot_20170815-123813.png

I'm not sure what this blood value means as I'm unfamiliar with it. Maybe a medfag can explain what this means and why this test be run?

Towards the end of the thread it's mentioned a miscarriage may be the cause of the start of her munching, that's beyond my post concern about how she could autoexsanguinate, but it's an intriguing read too.

Lol, wtf? :story:

extremely common for them to self-harm in some way to acquire signs to get whatever diagnosis they want at the time. most doctors rely on a combination of signs and symptoms to make a diagnosis. symptoms are reported by the patient, signs are objectively seen by others. they can lie about the symptoms, but to get the real validation, they've got to create signs. this is why they self-harm. you can say you're tired and sore, but you can't lie your way to a high wbc or low measured blood pressure.

you can fast or bleed yourself to get it, though.

Munchausen's is more common than MBP. it's easier to make yourself ill. they're the same thing in the basics though- causing symptoms to get attention from medical staff or other people. just as MBP usually harm the other person, plain Munchausen's involves self harm.

most people do have a variety of ills throughout their life. as people age, you'll see the common things pop up. maybe a digestive trouble, heart, high blood pressure. the fact that a symptom or illness is new, or the person has a few, isn't the red flag.

It's conflicting diagnoses- many in a short time. It's the vagueness and repeated incidents of drawn out interactions for minor illness and injury-noncompliance in their treatment, and anger at doctors who refuse to give the pet diagnosis. it's braggadocio about medical treatments, medical attention. those are red flags.

just pointing out- edit, yes she has a permanent port. she could easily pull blood that way with no indication she's done it. also think about the desperation of a junky using feet or groin veins- she's likely just as driven as they would be, to get her fix.

also, restricting her diet to low iron, not taking any prescribed vitamin/supplement, and abusing laxatives, combined with garden-variety anemia, could explain all her symptoms.

after reading that thread in the archive link, just wow.

just pointing out- she has an IV or line in that photo. does she have a permanent one? she could easily pull blood that way with no indication she's done it. also think about the desperation of a junky using feet or groin veins- she's likely just as driven as they would be, to get her fix.

Thank you.

I checked the thread and she does have a permanent port. She's apparently getting transfusions as often as ebery two weeks, so an open line makes sense but also makes it very easy to bleed herself.

Apparently she also has claimed to have uterine fibroids? I can't determine if it was legit or not.

fibroids are really common. usually they're treated with the Pill, and occasionally checking with ultrasound. not a big deal although someone with mch's will make it into a unique and horrific ordeal.

don't think bleeding is the only thing going on here, personally. I think she's combining that with laxative abuse and playing up minor anemia by exacerbating it on purpose with diet restriction. she doesn't "lack blood", she lacks iron.

there's nowhere for the excess blood to go. there's three or four posts there that are obviously actual doctors. the lingo is spot on. they all point this out.

Oh god this lolcow thread is magnificent and must be saved.

Admin has confirmed Kelly's IP matches all these posts.*

My favorite is Kellerina's psych report that may or may not have been written by herself.

cptsd is the gentle way to diagnose someone as histrionic or borderline. most psych docs don't want to diagnose those, as they complicate future treatments, since Munchausen's goes hand in hand with personality disorders. They'll often take a patient's claims of abuse at face value and diagnose PTSD to start with, just to keep the person in therapy (if they're called out on Munchausen's or personality disorders, many will go doctor hopping immediately)

patients with a pd often lie about past abuse. see the general munchie thread for more info on that.

So in your opinion it's legit? (I have zero knowledge of psych reports, but some on the thread thought it seemed off. Nevertheless it belies some astuteness if a lay person wrote it, she would seem to have the lingo down.)

So she actually posted her psych records. Who the fuck does that?! :story:

a munchie does that. they'll post anything to prove doctors paid attention.
it looks like a therapist's letter. it can't contain an actual diagnosis and will be based on self-reporting but there are idiot therapists and it's possible that it's actually a medical document.

it's equally possible she retyped the therapist's assessment and added "cptsd" (not a commonly used terminology) instead of "self harm" or malingering. that would give it a note of authenticity, while still being a forgery.

Aside from receiving contaminated blood, which I'm sure is really rare... Is there any long time risks to having transfusions so often? It certainly doesn't /sound/ healthy, but what do I know?
contaminated or mismatched/incorrectly labeled blood is really the risk. Also it can get hard on the liver and immune system.

Gotta wonder if Gina and Kelly live near each other. I wonder if Gina knows that Kelly has been posting under Gina's identity at the lolcow website.

I wonder if Gina knows her address and phone number are easily obtained through the Canada 411 site. http://www.canada411.ca/res/2508625169/Gina-Petrovich/356140513.html

At any rate, here's a self-post by Kelly displaying yet more batshittery about her time in the loony bin.
