Is apathy the same as death?

Imagine someone walking in the streets, and they are witnessing a robbery attempt. Physically, they are able to stop the crime, but for whatever reason they did nothing to stop it from happening, as if they're a dead body just standing around there.

Would you think the person should rather die than succumb to theor apathy? Do you think their apathy is death, or even worse than death?

so you're saying "should all innocent bystanders kill themselves"

I don't know if it has anything to do with apathy but my default reaction irl to other people's misfortunes is something along the lines of "lol faggots". Way better than death imo.

I don't think that not caring about something automatically makes you dead any more than caring about something makes you alive. People care about video games to the point where they will spend hundreds of hours of their lives arguing about video games on the internet. I sincerely doubt anyone thinks that this has been a fulfilling experience for them in retrospect. What exactly is the limit of scope for caring such that one is constituted alive? Are you supposed to care about everything, and equally? Am I supposed to care about a rock in Siberia? The ants in the grass outside?

If by apathy you mean that someone doesn't care about anything, then yes, it is akin to death. However I would not say that someone not intervening in a bank robbery is evidence that they do not care about anything.

I think you're confusing two things here - quality of life (is it worth my life continuing?) and morality (am I doing the right thing?). You may or may not be morally justified in not intervening in a robbery when you could - that's a judgment for the world in general to make. But whether or not your life is worth continuing is totally subjective to you.

You can be as apathetic as you like about everything, and still find life worth living for your own peculiar reasons.

Self-preservation is a one of the most basic traits of all living things, and that's why we don't necessarily view it as a bad thing. It's the moral equivalent of "Everybody Poops."
