Furry really, though had its share of autism way, way back. The relative difficulty getting on the internet 20+ years ago, and the winnowing effect of time, have helped. Depending on what you mean by 'early'.

When I say 'early', I mean primarily from about 1997 to 2007, the sort who were late teens or early 20s on Furcadia and Sabrous, or posting in frontier furry forums and boards, or just on NG and Deviant and soaking it all in. A lot of things from the furries I encountered that I considered strange/gross then are, in retrospect, quite tame. Just as a function of modern standards for furfag behavior. I'm talking as a nonfurry who's stumbled into some insular segments of furfaggotry, too.
The pre 1997 mags and cons seem to get some real freaks but there were few enough (documented in web2.0, at least) that it's hard to say it was a big deal, and while it's fairly reasonable to assert that there are some genuinely fucked up people who peaked between 1997 and 2007, the real cowsplosion seems to be after 2007.
