Huh I always Figured Something Awful would meltdown before Neogaf but I guess I was wrong.
Different kinds of death.
That the once-mighty juggernaut of SA would wind up slowly decaying quietly, its relevance fading into the distant past is easily a testament to both its staying power and Lowtax's failures in equal measure. The site's glory days are long gone, the thing remains an obsolete dinosaur of web design, and its final hours will be long and protracted, but the end result will be a comparatively gentle departure, one that may well take years to fully accomplish. The best of SA was always its community and that's already migrated elsewhere. In the end, you can say that there's at least things about SA that were
worth remembering. The Troonpocalypse was only a mild acellerant to an inevitable fall from grace and fade into the distant sunset, despite all the salt and hullabaloo.
People were legit sad to see SA slowly die.
To contrast: NeoGAF's a powderkeg waiting to go off.
The site being a hugbox for some of the most histrionic idiots on the interwebs is a major contributor to this, as most of the Social Justice tards on the site have essentially turned their forum as a whole, into a microcosm version of the Rat King subforum. Many of them are cut from the same cloth as Jake Alley (everyone I dislike is a Nazi), Nora Reed (anyone I dislike deserves harassment), and Bob Chipman (everything is fair game as long as my viewpoint wins). Everything has been conspiring to turn NeoGAF into even
more of a powderkeg, from the few remaining oldschoolers quietly conspiring against the overlords to the circular firing squads NeoGAF loves to form in order to stamp out dissent. Each measure by the site's membership intended to tamp down wrongthink and stifle dissent only provokes it worse, and raises both resentment among the community, raises the odds that someone high up is going to talk, and essentially helps guarantee that when the dam finally breaks, it's going to be fucking
hilarious.
No one is going to miss NeoGAF. It stopped being relevant a decade ago and no one sane has any respect for it.
