Phil does realize humans only have 2 ears yes? lol, surround sound headphones are among the most pointless marketing bullshit on Earth. A decent pair of stereo headphones will do the same fucking job.

I can see what you mean there because when he's not raging or having an 'emergency' his actual viewership lies well bellow 400 viewers and you can tell he hates that.
Thanks to the site twinge.tv my old effort of capping viewership was automated, since day 1 of DSP's return to Twitch. So I checked the latest 2 streams & the Sonic Forces premiere, he came close to 500 for Sonic, just over 400 for Mario on Wednesday & not even close to 400 for Wolfenstein 2 last night. Times are all UTC/GMT. Final Wolfenstein image is edited so the viewership box doesn't cover the chart.

Even better, as far as I can tell DSP doesn't record or stream in surround sound anyway - it's purely for his benefit. I'm only on a stereo setup, but I can only sniff stereo audio downloads on YouTube & for his Twitch VoDs - can anyone else see surround sound from DSP for either Twitch or YouTube?

The last time I looked into it YouTube pretty much didn't support surround sound (or had very minimal, browser/platform specific support) and I'm pretty sure Twitch doesn't even support it.

They're literally of no benefit to him other than a luxury. He claims he's at a massive disadvantage without surround sound, because he needs to hear everything around him in a game in order to succeed. Who the fuck is he trying to kid? How often does he play games where hearing footsteps and subtle noises actually matter? and more importantly - since when is he the type to be cautious and careful enough to use that information? Every shooter he plays he just sprints around by himself, spraying at anybody he see's until he gets sprayed back and killed. Rinse and repeat until the match is over. He's just trying to justify to himself his own frivolous spending habits.

Phil has a talent for tricking his fans into believing luxuries are necessities. Not just the headphones but the plant thing where he needs clean air or whatever. The whole netflix and hulu subscriptions that he needs them to 'wind down' or else he'd overload with stress and be hospitalised. All kinds of stuff.

Don't forget the Brazzers account. He 'needs' it since Leanna left him. Down the line he probably want someone to donate a sex doll for him.

Would be funny if someone donated a blow up doll.

Don't forget his "Paytrean" goals as well. He claimed his audio was bad (it wasn't) and set up goals for a new mic. Then later set up another goal for that sound-proofing shit you see in the background of his vlahgs.

I cant for the life of me name a game that actually 'uses' aurround sound as a mechanic aside from god of war 2.
Not to mention surround sound on headphones is a scam.
You have 2 ears, so 2 speakers speakers can give you the same amount of info as 7.
The human mind processes how loud the sounds arrive at in each given ear, and then is able to locate where the sound comes from.

As far as I know most surround sound headphones use virtual surround sound not true surround sound which means they still only have one driver in each ear and the surround sound is achieved via software. The Astro A40 headset that Phil wants does this. It's fair enough if you prefer a surround sound headset to a stereo one but not when you're spending hundreds of dollars and apparently in dire straights financially. I'm betting he's going to get the headset and the mixamp which is an extra $100 instead of using the mixamp he already has.

Yeah I believe it uses the Dolby Digital Live shit which is compressed as fuck and designed for scrubs. Surround sound technology is kind of a shit because back in the day a lot of things went on between the companies which prevented it from developing like other standards have.

Like others I wouldn't care about some random dude on the internet buying shitty headphones if that's what they really wanted to do, but there's some more to this that hasn't been pointed out so much.

Probably the most likely reason Phil wants (more like requires) these specific headphones is that they make configuring audio for streaming much easier, it'd be too much effort to learn the skills required to do this without some shitty expensive device, so this is Phil's easy mode. Just like everything else.

EDIT:
Looks like DSP is doing a poll via Twitter. Has he ever done one before? I recall mentioning this was something a lot of streamers did quite a while back...
