I can't speak for everyone, but for some people it is a cultural thing. The lighter you are the more "high class" you are. So, in some African countries this is a huge thing. I suspect the reasoning for some people is similar here in America, more of an aesthetic and if you think back to say, the time of slavery -- House Slaves were always lighter. Ie. You are not beautiful unless you are light skinned.

It's the same with Chinese people. They felt that people with darker skin are of a lower class since they have to work in the fields outdoors in the sun. Now they carry umbrellas to avoid getting any form of tans since it makes them look like the upper class.

It's also a thing in India and, I believe, East Asian countries. It used to be the case in Europe, too, to the extent that high-class women used to use white lead on their skin (which in the long term would do serious damage). The reasoning was that if you had a tan, you were probably outside working. This is probably also the root of the house slaves having lighter skin.

It was really in the 19th and 20th centuries that it changed for Europeans. Industrialisation and urbanisation meant that the poor and working classes were more likely to have an unhealthy pallor from working in factories and mines, whereas a tan indicated that you were wealthy and leisured enough to get out in the sun.

It shouldn't be but some people are just stunned. Somehow, they think that Black Americans came to America and 'lightened' up magically once they left 'Dark Africa'. Yes, there are lighter skinned Africans but most Black Americans are from Western African ancestors who were of darker skin color. The other issue is that Black Americans keep claiming that some of the non-African features that they have (straighter hair, smaller noses and lips) are from Native American ancestry. Well, for the majority of Black Americans, that's a no - either no Native American ancestry or so small as to be negligible. Those differences are from white European ancestry.

Probably because super duper black Americans are relatively uncommon outside of the deep south. My mom had thought she'd seen really dark black people in inner cities until briefly moving to coastal Mississippi. Factor in that there are a lot of places where you only see blacks on TV and yeah, people will be surprised at how dark people can naturally be.

I think most of the treatments to even out skin tones, remove blotches and flaws, etc. naturally result in lighter skin. Like nose jobs and implants and liposuction, some people just keep going and going with it and end up like Lil Kim.

Some of the local Catholic charities helped a lot of boys and young men orphaned in African conflicts relocate to America, and a most of those guys are really dark. A couple guys who lived in my neighborhood weren't even just dark, they were as close to 'black' as I've ever seen. Really tall and thin too, like miniature Manute Bols. I guess the big difference is that these are actual photos of actual people, whereas the other shit was just drawings.

Anyway, what gets me about this is that 80% of these people were attractive before they got work done. Jesus, go to a fucking therapist before deciding to cut up your face- self-acceptance and a little makeup go a long way.

As for people like Axl who got work done because they were trying to reverse aging- maybe take care of yourself to begin with. Eat decently, get exercise, wear sunscreen, and don't fucking do drugs. Emphasis on don't fucking do drugs. People often wonder why Weird Al has aged so little, but it's not that he hasn't aged. He's just one of the few 80s/90s musicians out there who didn't smoke like a chimney and vaccuum up cocaine.

I'm not saying all back pain reductions are lies, but you'd be surprised at the amount that secretly admit they just wanted them gone. If the back pain thing is universally true, women with implants like this would be in wheelchairs.
