The Broadway musical is definitely to blame for the sudden surge of fanart. It features a somewhat diverse cast (Sandy and Pearl are black; most of the designs in what you posted are based on the costumes and actors from the musical) so Tumblr of course picked it up. It doesn't seem like an especially bad musical but Tumblr likes to take things that extra mile.

Although in this case the characters are aliens I guess? It's probably been pointed out before, but just from reading the summary on MAL... this show seems weirdly similar to Steven Universe. (Yes, I'm aware the manga came out a few months before SU aired).

It's would be kind of cool to see the same premise done in a more adult context with better artwork. Is the show worth watching?

They're literally white. As in, the "skin" powder they use to protect their gem bodies from corrosion is white. Not even skintone white.

And hell yes it's worth watching. I recommend it for anyone who was disappointed by Steven Universe or who just likes weird anime.

The first couple of pics are alright, I think. They didn't go full autismo brownwash, there's still hope for them. Roadhog looks too pretty to be himself, he's sexualized in a weird way.
