I must admit though, that is some meta shit. They not only wanted to piss off users with their articles but also by using popups. I honestly always figured they were getting paid for it. Short term the popups were probably funny, but long term they probably hurt the site a lot.

also I seriously doubt ED will die, they'll likely return and the corpse will continue on.

That's mostly what it was intended to be when it came back after one of its unintended downtimes, but then people kept adding onto it. And the resulting quality went downhill rather quick.

As for someone else taking the reigns, it all depends on what happens regarding Zaiger. Wouldn't doubt it returning under a new host, but who would be the big question.

It's not that hiring a lawyer was a bad idea but he could have gotten the same result with a cheap lawyer on a $1K retainer.

I'm pretty sure Randazza was reasonably confident on getting a fee award before he signed on to this. Since I'd make a wild guess Zaiger is basically bankrupt at this point without a fee award, and I seriously doubt Randazza was unaware of the finances situation, he was apparently willing to take the gamble. The general rule is parties pay their own fees, win or lose, the opposite of the European rule.

However, Monsarrat has a fairly well established pattern and practice of filing vexatious lawsuits simply to harass and cost people money for saying anything he doesn't like. He is essentially defanged if he ends up having to pay everyone's legal fees rather than getting what he wants, which is to bankrupt his enemies with meritless, frivolous lawsuits.

Incidentally, what he is billing is well within the range of market prices for someone of his talent, expertise, and in many cases, being the only attorney willing to defend against vindictive, vexatious litigants like Monsarrat. I could see the court awarding fees but slightly reducing the hourly.

This was pretty clearly a meritless spite lawsuit filed with no intention other than costing the other side money and with zero chance of victory.

I like EDF people I hope they all come here.

It's not like we can stop them. I've never had any problem with any of the EDiots here except when LIC made me butthurt for a couple weeks and turned me into a newt (it got better).

Easier said than done. You might point at the bogus lolsuits thrown at Null so far, but those were literally written by retarded children in crayon, didn't even make sense, and never even served.

An actual lawyer of the sort hired by a multimillionaire who doesn't give a shit how much money he spends can keep even a crap lawsuit alive for months or years. If you have even a marginal grasp on civil procedure, an unlimited budget, and a lack of ethics, you may not be able to win your lawsuit, but you can fuck with the other side indefinitely.

So, if ED is not going away anytime soon (as much as it has outlived its usefulness to most people...), I think it would be in their best interest to clean that site up, already. Too bad that takes money and work, both of which are lacking badly here after this lawsuit, besides before it, knowing those ads weren't paying for shite.

Damn shame it has to happen (seeing as I did frequent that site for fun/educational purposes quite a lot before coming on to KF, myself.), but something that is so fucking ridden with ads and viruses isn't useful to anyone, honestly!

I'll always think fondly of ED. ED introduced me to CWC, and CWC led--via a long and winding road of discussion pages, cogsdev, and various shenanigans--to KF. But last time I tried to visit the site, it was just a mess, and so many of the pages were out of date or broken. It's been dying for years. If this does finally kill the site ... Well, it'll be a bit like euthanasia.

But it would be interesting to keep an archive of the pages all rolled back to '07 or '08. Or maybe further, to Chanology or something similar. It would be a really nifty historical artifact.

There were always people posting dumb shit on ED. As effortless as it may have looked at the time from the outside as a casual browser like I was, dive into the edit history and talk pages and it's always a chaotic mess.

The thing is, there used to be a vibrant community of editors who would ruthlessly remove lame shit from articles, instantly delete shitty madposting disguised as humor, and make sure relentless madposters who turned into persons of interest themselves got articles. You had wildly offensive articles about any imaginable subject, and for instance, the once hilariously anti-Semitic articles on Jews would be written by Nazis, Jews themselves, and everyone in between, and still be funny and only mildly incoherent.

The articles on politicians trended right like much 4chan-related shit did, but nobody got out of being mercilessly mocked from every conceivable perspective, somehow in the same article and sometimes even in the same sentence.

(I found ED because I was wondering who the fuck this staring, slack-faced autistic dude who kept getting his pictures posted on /b/ was and found Chris. The article was completely full of fuck at the time and the talk page full of people mocking Chris-obsessed autists who were even then trying to turn the article into what ended up as the CWCki by adding mountains upon mountains of utter trivia to the article every day while other EDiots deleted it.)
