Jim Groat - RIghtwing Gunnie and ManChild

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Since I don't see it mentioned here and it's an interesting little insight into Groat's mind:

Groat apparently had several offers from at least one guy to buy the Red Shetland IP off of him. Apparently the guy thought that a horse version of Red Sonja could be made to sell (or at least sell to furries), and was willing to give Groat a pretty decent amount of money for the IP and all his print run that he's been trying to unload for years.

Groat refused.

Now, this was not a $20 and half a case of beer offer, we're talking actual comics industry level money (maybe not Big Two level industry money, but maybe Dark Horse level money). So there are two options here... one, Groat is just too attached to his lame parody and still thinks he's going to hit it big with it someday (possible), or he actually thought the guy would come back with an even bigger offer, possibly in the seven figure range (my bet).

Basically it's like if Sega and Nintendo actually teamed up and offered Chris $2,000,000 for the rights to Sonichu and he blew them off hoping they'd come back and meet the demands he made in his recent video.

Let me guess. Groat made up that story. Right?

Nope, heard it from someone else who apparently heard it from other sources, not Groat. It may have been the Vivisector thread where I read it, or CrushYiffDestroy before that.

Can confirm. It wasnt from Groat unless Vivisector was quoting Groat and I doubt they would take him seriously

Still skeptical. Red Shetland was only allowed to remain unsued because Marvel and/or the REH Estate felt it was probably not worth the lawsuit (sort of like the reasons why Nintendo/SEGA haven't sued Chris yet over Sonichu). When Rich Konkle (the character's actual creator) went off to have a life, he just gave the character to Groat. If Groat tried to sell it, THEN you'd better expect Marvel AND the REH Estate to have something to say about it.

Not to defend Groat here, but Red Shetland clearly falls under the parody umbrella. It's not a great parody, but it's very clearly a parody, since it's approached via comedy and makes jokes at the expense of the source material. Suing Groat for infringement over Red Shetland would be like them trying to sue Dave Sim over Cerebus. Marvel/the REH Estate would actually be the assholes in that equation.

BTW, I found the mention of the proposed buyout story:

Still reads to me like someone was trying to troll Groat though, so I remain skeptical.
To be reading Calbeck's last journal it looks like it became more of an offer to work with Richard and do what Jim was supposed to be doing.
You could always message him and ask him what he was prepared to pay. Hes still active on FA and... oh look hes into inflation!

From what I know, Konkle had abandoned the Red Shetland comic years.....actually decades ago. I think he gave the characters to Jim as a way to get Groat out of his life. Jim is a very, very toxic individual. He could turn Jesus into a misanthrope in less than a day.

Amazing how his wife put up with him. I wonder what his son thinks of him now. Also his daughter.

Grapevine says that his son is ashamed of that "trash diving" news report and doesn't want to associate with Jim. The daughter isn't as hostile, but she seems to not be proud of dear ol Dad either. Of course, Jim will blame it all on his ex twisting their minds against him.

Any luck finding that trash diving vid?

Lost to History I'm afraid. Just as well. That kid doesn't need to be haunted by it.

From what I recall, it was Jim dragging his young son around town to where all of the college students would dump their crap on the curb after graduation before moving out of the dorms. Jim would have his son sift through the crap looking for stuff Jim could sell on eBay and come across the occasional sack of discarded food and determine if it falls within his standards of being edible enough.

However, I DID find this precious little gem of Groatstory:

(26:45 Mark)

Jim was cast as an extra in 1993's "Tombstone" (with Val Kilmer and Kurt Russel). Jim is the one wearing a bowler hat (and clean shaven, no less) getting grabbed out of his theater chair and kicked in the ass. His greatest life moment of being in the movies, and it's to be "Western Townie Bitch".

"I don't like other people who cram their opinions down others throats"

The people who say this are usually the kind of people who have to be told "Shut the fuck up" several times in an elevated tone before they actually shut the fuck up.

Jim is back at the forefront of drama after claiming someone was taping "nazi furs fuck off" ribbons to his artist alley stuff, which was later picked up by people like 2 Gryphon.
