For some men, becoming like (their fantasies and personal ideas of a) woman is a fetish and tying transgenderism to transformation furry fetish stuff is telling. There are plenty of furries out there who want to live out their fetishes IRL and the furry fandom has been lately been populated with fewer oldschool eccentrics and an increasing number of losers with identity issues. The man who got plastic surgery to look like a cat comes to mind, and he ended up killing himself in his garage at the age of 54 (like a lot of people with body identity issues do in the end).

I get the feeling that furries with this fetish who go down the route of troondom in this manner are doing it because of autogynophelia mixed with the classic body identity issues you see from people who end up getting tons of plastic surgeries to look like a celeb, only to look like Michael Jackson at the lowest points in his life. For them, transformation went from a RP setting or setup for a weird piece of furry art (and years ago TF art/stories would be about turning someone into a submissive cockslut) to masturbatory self-affirmation. It's why there's a whole subgenre of TF art now that is about a lonely nerd turning into a spanking hot furry woman with big tits. It's also why this fetish appeals so much to troons, it's their fantasy.

Also about the HRT and conditions, that reminds me of someone else I know on Discord who's FTM. They had to quit transitioning due to medical complications. I've also heard HRT can affect you bigtime if you have HIV and have to take medication for it, and that's why some trannies will forego HIV medication to take HRT instead.

Antiretrovirals are known to be pretty side-effect-laden to women in general, so it makes sense there's a hormonal component to that. I don't know how screwed up you'd have to be to pick hormones over 'horrible lingering death', though.

It's worth noting that the 90's had its own broken people/mere eccentrics fight with the 'lifestyler' craze. Most of those people (and Stalking Cat was one) fucked off into 'therianism' or other wackiness. Back then, TF was mostly really broken autistic folks. I know, I know 'what's changed', but it was more fetish-based back then, like you say. Awful, but they stayed in the corner and did their fucked-up thing.
