Pretty informative overall, I've always had a bit of trouble drawing lips and not just on dark skinned characters so this helps! I don't get why they keep saying "If you do them like this, it's racist because they did it like that back then when they wanted to be racist." Not every black person has big lips + there's also non-black people who have big lips. I think a better way to approach this would be to recognize everyone's lips are different, sizes and tints, so get creative and practice with drawing varied lips.

Finn doesn't really look like Finn but, eh, it's fine. I've seen much better tutorials, but this isn't the worst thing ever - quick, easy to follow, probably good for beginners (although studying from life, paintings and photos is still the best way to learn for anyone).

I would say that's more the artist not drawing him with John Boyega's facial structure than anything. But it's good someone recognizes those SU inspired caricature lips are both ugly and look like racist stereotypes.

I remember seeing that one from a /co/ thread from years ago. IIRC the thread had a drawing challenge where artists drew "SJW"-ified version of characters. So it's really just a parody rather than a serious attempt at making Sonic more SJW-friendly.

I can give them human Sonic being black too, since many of the fastest Olympic runners are black and lots of people know Jaleel White's Sonic voice, if only because of the Sonic Sez memes.

That tutorial was pretty on point except the last part. 'sausage lips' are super common in black street art, and it's put on non-black characters too, especially in anime. As long as you don't make the lips red it's more of a stylist choice

And yet even she got the Filipino phrases wrong. NO PARENT EVER calls their child "syota" as it's more of a term meaning "boyfriend/girlfriend". Yes, the dictionary term has it mean "sweetheart", but it's widespread considered more of a term for a romantic partner. A more acceptably endearing word for parents to call their daughter (or basically a little girl from an adult point of view) is "Iha".

Also, while "Ina" is correct as it's a referential word to a mother and back then when everything in the Philippines is formal, it's more preferable for Filipino kids nowadays to call their moms as "Inay" or "''Nay" (as in Nanay, another word for "mother"), hell even "'Ma" works .

Basically she REALLY does not know how to even make actually good pee oh cees.

EDIT: Of course, she only has her be written as Filipino-American because "representation" without legit research.

Overall, I don't have any major complaints, but in regards to the last panel if your style is that cartoony you'd be better off just forgetting about the lip issue and just treating everyone's mouth the same, since the Steven Universe style (|) mouth is equally as ugly because it creates a bunch of unnecessary and distracting lines that clash on the face. Plenty of cartoons don't put lips on their black characters and no one gets confused about what race they are.

That being said someone should really show this to Rory over in the Tumblr thread, I'm sure she'll love it.

You know... I have to begrudgingly hand it to Rory. Despite becoming one of the most reviled artists within fandom in recent memory (especially as the prime example of what's wrong with Tumblr art), especially by the people she supposedly panders to, she still continues to keep on doing what she's doing with zero fucks given.
