Not entirely. Look at CD PROJEKT RED. A studio that prides itself on making its games worthwhile, even its DLC, and doesn't care about sexualizing women in their games. GamerGate didn't save them or anything but I wouldn't be surprised if it gave them and devs like them room to be emboldened about disregarding certain aspects of political correctness. Not quite. As far as stopping things before they get completely fucked go, Then.... Yeah, that horse is out of the barn, but there's more to it.

Usually by the time people realize that there's something like this going down in some hobby or entertainment medium, the damage is already done. Once they get a critical mass entrenched it's really hard to clear them out without them absolutely fucking up everything to competition standards - unless they start hitting the bottom line. Once the infestation hits critical mass, boycotting their outlets until they're expunged is about the best you can hope for, since they'll cheerfully tank a given franchise rather than let its actual fans have it.

One of the greatest weapons in the arsenal of the self proclaimed "superior future" crowd (to coin a term from Bob Chipman) is the fact that they abuse the good nature of everyone else. They try to portray themselves as interested in the needs of the community, and they'll actively wrap themselves in that flag, even if it's patently obvious they care fuck all for it. The generally permissive nature of nerds in general is a major reason these clowns got a foothold in the first place.

This initial form of defense is something they maintain throughout the campaign, and while it initially remains somewhat logical at first, inevitably it devolves into the usual madness once things progress. Once the usual suspects are insulated, they try to actively put anyone who raises legit concerns to the ground as, at minimum, a reckless over-reactor (something easy to portray, since many fans can be incredibly spergy, as any Kiwi knows) and further go on portray anyone who raises more articulate concerns or legitimate criticism as bigots and hatemongers, even if the concerns and criticisms they raise have fuck all to do with women or minorities - you can see examples of this everywhere from people complaining about Baldur's Gate: Dragonspear's numerous bugs and multiplayer woes being called transphobic (because of this odious piece of shit) to the sheer volume of online publicatons that absolutely lost their shit after James Rolfe said he wasn't going to see Ghostbusters 2016 because he thought the movie looked like shit.

Point of fact is that when we finally reach the point where an event like this happens, it's almost always too late, and all we can really do is watch the 'tism unfold.

There's already a salt thread for that as @emspex mentioned, but I think it should be moved to the Community Watch as it's basically become similar to this thread, there's hardly any salt being shown there anymore, mostly discussions of the MTG community and its future.

I'm not very involved with that fandom, so I can't comment on this one, but I feel there's a promising case there being handled by an incompetent leading figure (Jeremy).

If I had to compare this Comics movement to GG, I'd say this one has less autism, which makes things easier and harder, on one hand they don't have crazy people like seatlle4truth or Vordrak amongst them, but at the same time they are definitely not as autistically thorough as they should have been, thus ensuring that a lot of important shit got lost because no one archived it, and ensuring that some stuff went uninvestigated.

I personally moved on to Manga and indie comics (stuff like Scalped for example) years ago, mainly because of the constant crossovers and relaunches in US Comics making it impossible for me to follow the larger plots without devoting more time than I could afford.
