I'm not sure if he really believes some nutty version of himself being politically "left" (compared to his Mormon community as mentioned above) or if he's engaging in some kind of attempted ruse to play as a reasonable party (saying he's "left" to more easily criticize the left the way someone might use a black avatar on twitter to avoid getting called out on racist shit- there's gotta be a clever word or phrase for that, right?)

In Russ's view, he was raised a Mormon but fucks hookers (or tries to), and that's not conservative. And he wants brothels legalized, and that's not conservative. So, he's "far left" of how he was raised even though all of his OTHER political views are conservative. He also probably thinks it gives his pro-Trump arguments more weight, as in "I'm far left politically, yet I can still see that Trump is right about whatever...."
